Kenyan Woman Launches Book to Help those Seeking to Migrate to the US

A new book that seeks to help Kenyans looking forward to migrating to the United States has been launched.

Titled The American Success Pathways: How to Realise Your American Dreams and Desires, the book was unveiled in Nairobi on Saturday.

The book is authored by Janet Kisaka Rangi, a Kenyan nurse who moved to the US 16 years ago.

Daily Nation reported that Ms. Rangi quit her job at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi in 2003 after getting an opportunity to move to the US through an application process with some agents in the city.

Janet, who was pregnant with her first child at the moment, traveled to the US leaving behind her husband.

The mother of two says she experienced a lot of hurdles settling in the US but she eventually became a citizen by naturalization.

Her experience before settling down inspired her to begin giving advice to those seeking to move to the US on how to navigate through vetting processes and how to settle down in America.

Janet has been offering advice to people through e-mails and via her YouTube channel “Janet Rangi” that has close to 5,000 subscribers now.

She has packaged the advice she has been giving individuals in her new 262-page book.

“I have spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours digging valuable information and responding to thousands of questions. This has allowed me to garner a wealth of information that, eventually, I decided to package into a book,” Janet writes in the introductory part of her book.

In an interview with Lifestyle last week, Janet spoke about the difficulties she experienced in her initial years in the US.

“The reason it was difficult at first is because I went there alone. I was married and I left my husband behind. I was also pregnant. I also had other social issues like the culture shock, being in a new country, new job, a first-time mother and the worst was I didn’t know how to drive,” she recounted.

She said it was difficult for her to transition from Kenya “where things are done for you” to the US “where you have to do them all alone.”

“It had nothing to do with my career. In fact, it helped me a lot because I always had money to give to carpool with other people and also pay for childcare for my baby,” she noted.

In the US, she furthered her studies by obtaining a Master’s in family nurse practice from the University of California.

Janet also completed her postgraduate studies from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley where she specialized in psychiatry and mental health.

She said she noticed most people seeking to migrate to the US lack information and her book will come in handy.

“Even just talking to people here, I can see that they want to go to America and are struggling. I said, ‘Ok, there is some truth there and we need to fix this.”

Janet said her new book is a collection of what people have been asking her on e-mail and other platforms.

“The responses made me go back and talk to them and that is how it all started.”

“When I started with the clips on social media, it was easy because I would get like 20 questions and I would respond. Then all of a sudden, the messages started flooding in my direct messages and they became overwhelming. I decided that I would be responding through my videos,” said Rangi.

“Although nothing is promised, those who put in practice what I deliver through my regular blogs and books are more likely to succeed. We all need to search in the right places. I always say in my blogs that we need to know what the world knows because the information is power,” she says in her book.

Janet said the majority of her followers want to know how to get a Green Card and visa-related questions.

“Apart from Green Card lottery (diversity visa program), there are many ways to get a Green Card and people have no idea how to. There are other ways but you have to get to the US first,” she said.

She explained that being a nurse once in the US is the fastest way one can get a Green Card.

“Physical therapy is another way that people can become citizens and many people in Kenya do not know that. But to get it, one has to have a Master’s degree in the field,” she noted.

In her book, she explains to readers which jobs need high school education and which ones require candidates with a diploma or degree.

no one will ever tell you the "proper" way to make it in the states or whatever. Everyones journey is unique and depends on how you handle a lot of stuff like culture shock, stress, and here recently with Trump, RACISM. having family or good friends also helps a lot, however not fair-weather friends. so, I hope this book is free, if not, please don't buy.

Other way to get greencard is divorcing yr wife or hasi then getting married to nyeuthis who r useless pay their upkeep, sleep with them sometimes spending all yr fortunes n u can finally get it.Or find a mzungu/nyeuthis get married u pretending u love the gal or the guy mnazaa unwanted kids then after yr papers have gone thru starts frustrating the guy/lady then ask for divorce n pap yr greencard is out??I quoted this because majority of kenyans/africans have used this route which is bad immoral, evil juu we always behaved like holier than thou christians who pretend to follow the bible knowing very well wr going against Gods teaching??So i hope this book will help many aslong as it's not telling ole to lie or bin doggies. Also i forgot many lies ati they were to b circumcised by mungiki/my husband wanted to kill me/ it's not safe in kenya yaani u lie filling as a political refugee??Hizi upuzi zote will come to hunt u in future both mental or spiritual trust me on that??My point was try yr best to run away from evil doings n yr God u believe in will always show u the way.Yes it will b hard but if ur open U will see the light at the end of the tunnel.Trust me u don't have to leave kenya or African to b somebody in life(watch that's my book title to b launched soon)Cheers

Janet, your intention in writing the book may be good but the reality on the ground is quite different. Trump is busy making America great again (white again). There is a lot that is changing in this western countries where immigrants are unwanted and especially from "shit-hole" countries.
What our people need is for every individual to research and find out more information (google). Talk each one to your friends and relatives, seek advice. Find out about racism in the states where you intend to settle. (Racism is at all times high) Find out about the weather in those states.(climate change is affecting alot of areas negatively)
If you are older, do not leave your country. All countries have pro's and con's. If you are too young, do not leave either, it may be impossible to deal with negative emotions of racism.
Do research and more research, make informed decision. Invest in research before investing in re-location plans.

or we can start fighting these goons destroying our country and enriching themselves, you dont see germans or Norwegians flooding to america, why? because they are comfortable and making a decent livable income, we need to sort out our issues back home and the mzungus would be the ones begging to come join us. Get the best hospitals, research based universities, improve security and the big one is end this corruption or atleast reduce it to a manageable level

I support fighting the goons corrupting our country to the death. What kind of future will our country have if these lose morons are let go. It is a better way than encouraging people to run away from our motherland! America iko na wenyewe kama vile Trump said the other day.

Good Job Janet (Fomerly Okutoyi from Misikhu Girls). But you speaketh from Texas Experience, huku ma East, a Masters in PT will not get you anywhere. Barely an internship. And where you went to get it matters. Now, let us be honest: also look at your chances of succeeding in that field too. As PT, who is your target audience?

Totally agree. Settling in the US is a personal journey. Everyone's experience is different, and what works for one person may not necessarily work for another. This is what the lady should have told the people making enquiries, instead of attempting to explain. This book may initially sell well, before people realize it is a bluff.

wenye walikuja na student visa au visiting au exchange program ndio ma real Husslers. Their experiences are very different from those who came here with greencards.

Let the lady help people by writing the book and collecting the money because she worked hard for it. To those critics who are not giving alternatives nor are they willing to help pilipili usiyoila yakuwashia nini? Kenyans and their crab mentality of dragging each other down. I know people who have lived in the USA for 20 yrs and are still not settled, l mean almost homeless. Setting and prospering in this land is unique to everyone based on things like, where you landed when you first came in, who hosted/mentored you, did they exploit you and make you babysit their 5 Kids for 5 years before you could know that you are employable? Which visa was yours? What was your background in Kenya (could you sacrifice to go to school or your priorities were to feed your starving family back home)? etc.

@Mkenya Halisi: Leave People Alone. Find yourself a ticket to Heaven before you judge people. You are a Sinner too. You are always judging people on this chat. Don't think you are any perfect by any means. Carry your own burden and leave people alone. It's Maisha yao, na wewe uko na yako.

I am slow to say this, but I will say it in this case. This book is pure BS. The way the US system operates, neither the Ambassador in Kenya, nor even the US President, can know who is going to be given a US green card, or even a visa. So how does Janet know? She gives few details, but the few that she gives, like becoming a nurse, are false. Even Doctors, Scientists, and Brain Surgions, are not given automatic visas because of their areas of study. They have to go through a different lottery, and they are mostly from India. I think that she is just trying to make some money, from an idea she got from the overwhelming inquiries she got from curious people on her website. She is not clear about how she came into the US, or what happened to her 'husband' in Kenya. She was nurse in Kenya. Kenyan Qualifications are not transferable to America, because it is not part of the British Commonwealth. But she seems to imply that they are, from her communications. She either ignores this, or doesn't even know about it. My take? 'Janet' is probably fake, and has never set foot in America. She is a creation of an imaginative mind in Kenya.

Ha, ha..just a sister trying to hustle and wring out some coins from the vulnerable, seeking to immigrate to better themselves. Good luck, but I would not buy it even if it cost a penny. @Mkenya halisi, as you have been telling us how good being back is, please go ahead and write that book, making sure you include how one navigates around those mafisi corrupt leaders and even some relatives seeking to milk every drop of imaginary wealth out of one. Please! I will definitely buy it as I would LOVE to move back and bask in the beauty of our country, but the coins never seem to add up!

mkenya halisi (not verified)     Wed, 07/17/2019 @ 06:02pm

Hehehehe @sukari i will do so.About money not adding up please think about what really simple good life means n trust me yr coins will add up n u will return easily.Dont listen to many pple who tells u that u needs lots of cash to survive hapa home coz u don't need that much?First build yr hse which u will own n it doesn't matter which area.If u will have hustled enough have another back up ya something giving u from 60-150 max n if u have more that's good which comes monthly. Then start farming juu that's where money is juu pple have to eat?Thats another 60k or over on top of the first one.I can guarantee you that hata kama uko na 2/3 kids i will live way way beta than majuu life.

mkenya halisi (not verified)     Wed, 07/17/2019 @ 06:06pm

@sue why ru calling me a hater.Tell me for sure what i wrote about papers that's not what majority of kenyans or africans do to get papers.Truth pains or hurts my sister. So tafadhali let us b pple who r telling the truth thou u cannot control pples living??Yes maisha ni yako which ever way u want to live but b ready for criticism.hahaha ukweli huuma kweli.

Kenya (not verified)     Wed, 07/17/2019 @ 10:22pm

I hope Janet Kisaka Rangi has a thick skin because most of the comments are negative. Afadhali she could have written about her life instead of advising people how to move to USA.

Mundumugo (not verified)     Wed, 07/17/2019 @ 10:49pm

Anyone can and should do their own research. Visit the uscis page https://www.uscis.gov/greencard/eligibility-categories and find out out for yourself. Then talk to an honest person in the diaspora (in the US in this case). Figure out how much you will spend, understanding that any money spent on this quest is not refundable. If you are already a professional doing well in Kenya or are into or past your third decade, stay there. If you are determined to come here, life for a newbie is beyond difficult and expensive, after all you may be paid in dollars but your expenses, similarly, are in dollars. There will be culture shock, assorted slights, discrimination etc to deal with. The entrepreneurial spirit of the lady is good but you dont need a book to figure out your own path. Deportee Halisi may be motivated by malice, envy and jealousy and is no doubt a hater, but even as a broken analog clock is right twice a day, he has some points worth considering

It can’t be true that everything that Janet is saying is false. There are a number of people who have benefited from her content. Why do Kenyans like pulling each other down. Can’t we even just encourage each other regarding at least a positive attempt made amongst us! This is where we go wrong. “Watu wengine wanasaidiana na sisi tuko busy kuangushana.”
