Kenyan Academic Dr Esther Wanja Found Dead in California Apartment
Dr Esther Wanja Wachira, a Kenyan nurse practitioner and academic, has been found dead in her apartment in Culver City, California.
Her death has deeply affected Kenyan communities in both the United States and Kenya, where she was respected for her professional work and personal character. She built a distinguished career in nursing and academia, earning recognition for her commitment to patient care and education.
Dr Wachira completed her undergraduate and master’s degrees at Salem State University before obtaining a doctorate from the University of Texas. Colleagues and former classmates describe her as focused and disciplined, with a strong sense of purpose in her academic and professional pursuits. She was known for using her knowledge to support and guide others.
Those who knew her personally remember her as kind, humble, and generous. Friends and family have paid tribute to her warmth and her willingness to help others, noting the lasting impact she had through mentorship and quiet acts of support.
Her death has left a significant gap within the Kenyan diaspora in the United States, where community networks often provide essential support. Family members and community leaders are now organising funeral arrangements and have asked for assistance from well-wishers. Contributions are being coordinated through designated representatives.
Dr Wachira’s legacy is reflected in the patients she treated, the students she taught, and the community she supported throughout her career. At the same time, concern is growing within the Kenyan diaspora following the disappearance of Nahashon Wanyoike, also known as “Kama,” in Washington State.
He was last in contact on 15 March while travelling to work in Shoreline but did not arrive. His whereabouts remain unknown as efforts to locate him continue.
