Kenyan Woman Hangs Herself After Being Diagnosed with Cancer

A 40-year-old Kenyan woman has killed herself after discovering that she was suffering from cancer.

Purity Muthoni from Naivasha, Nakuru County committed suicide after she was diagnosed with breast cancer at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi.

Muthoni had been undergoing treatment in various hospitals after she developed a growth on one of her breasts but doctors were yet to discover she had cancer. After failing to recover, she decided to seek medication at KNH, where she was diagnosed with cancer.

After she was diagnosed with cancer, the deceased traveled back to Naivasha, where she had been living with her sister. She hanged herself with a rope shortly after her sister left her house in Kasarani Estate.

Confirming the incident, Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru said her body was moved to Naivasha Hospital Mortuary.

“According to the sister, the deceased received results that she was suffering from breast cancer and she went into depression before committing suicide,” Waweru said.

Joyce Wangui, a neighbor, said the deceased informed her friends that she did not want to experience the kind of pain cancer patients go through.

“She waited until the sister had gone to work before using a rope to commit suicide after telling her friends that she did not want to undergo the pain other cancer victims had gone,” said Wangui.

I think this is the best thing she did!She didn't have children so she didn't abandon anybody! She was an adult so it was her rights to do what she did!She didn't want to bankrupt her family with treatment zenye haziishi but zinakula tu pesa na mwishowe utakufa juu that's what cancer does?Unaambiwa umepoma then it comes with its children years later?Muthoni enda salama nausalimie wenye utakuta huko juu pia sisi tukokwanjia. How i wish those so called 60 mpigs who have cancer can do us a favour n do what muthoni did??

Not true coz not all cancers are the same based on causes and states of the disease. Stage 1-2 cancers are treatable and I support mastectomy as a preventative and treatment measure for every breast cancer. Cancer in kenya is not being adequately treated, uncontrolled pain ain’t an issue in advanced cancer institutes. Nausea , decrease appetite, decrease immunity, potential chances of infection due to chemo agents. Hospice and palliative care sucks too due to lack of enough medications to control pain and anxiety. Sad 😢
