Governor Sonko Freed on Sh30 Million Bond, Barred from Accessing Office

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who has been in police custody for five days, was on Wednesday released on a cash bail of Sh15 million or an alternative bond of Sh30 million with a surety of a similar amount.

While granting bail to Governor Sonko, Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti noted that bond can only be denied if it is proved that the accused person is likely to interfere with witnesses.

The magistrate further barred Governor Sonko from accessing his office until the case is heard and determined. Magistrate Ogoti said the accused should be escorted by investigating officers if there is a need to access the offices.

Sonko was also ordered to refrain from commenting on the case on social media or in public as well as deposit his passports and other travel documents in court.

Sonko, who is accused of misappropriating county funds amounting to Sh357 million, was on Monday charged with over 10 counts related to corruption. Sonko and his 15 co-accused pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The case will be mentioned on January 15th, 2020.

@Guest #13. What you don't seem to understand is that there is more to this case than eyes can see. Yes, Sonko is corrupt as is with more than half of Kenyan Population(you are equally corrupt if you take bribe to get your way through so there are no saints in Kenya). This case is about 2022 succession and it centers around DP William Ruto's support. The establishment realizes that Nairobi will play a pivotal role in determining who will become the next head of State and want to make sure whoever is heading it has uniquivably loyalty to it. Behind the scene Sonko, like Waititu, is a Ruto supporter and Ruto is not their favorite candidate. Sonko has to go. EACC is a political body in disguise not a corruption body as Kenyans have been misled to believe(Same lies as with SGR. Suswa is not in Naivasha). Because there are no Saints in Kenya EACC is being marked as holy than thou body but in reality it is been used by the establishment to root out potential opponent in order to maintain status quo. The fake of 2022 election is already determined. What is going on is positionings. Kenya ceased to be a multi party country with the handshake. The leader of the ruling party unofficially became head of opposition party and the opposition party became the government. Central Kenya is in the dark as it has always been. It does not realize what's going on because it put all its eggs in one basket. The Keyword here is Ruto

The Nairobi County corruption is deeply interwoven with nearly all the so “big-shorts” in the country; the main reason you see 12 corrupt lawyers rushing to Sonko’s rescue to maintain the status quo under the cover for their misdeeds. Sonko is not in this along - he has every body you can imagine in the corruption network, except the common mwanchi who may be running in the streets asking for their criminal leader to be released from the cells. And when the case eventually arrives to the high court, Sonko will be cleared by all the high courts judges so he can continue exciting corrupt deals for them. How Kenya got here, only Satan knows because God would not steal from his children!!

@Maina your argument makes sense. It just seems like a lot more money is being stolen since nothing much has happened in Nairobi since Sonko took over besides increased garbage. Perhaps Sonko stopped feeding the big men with big bucks so they went after him. He is their cashcow, their thug, mtu wa mkono.

Precisely!! Itumbi just commented that Sonko is being prosecuted because he supports DP Ruto, the high priest of corruption!! Sink is Mtu wa mkono working on behalf of the corruption cartel headed by Ruto - Over Kshs 350,000,000 has been stolen and now a defense of 12 corrupt lawyers have rushed to defend a thief?? Wow, only in Kenya where a thief is defended by a bunch of thieves! The ordinary Kenyans will have to decide how to find a clear path into the future; for those they have elected have abused the power bestowed to them by the poor! What is currently happening in Kenya will cause a mass movement bigger that what is happening in Hong Kong!

You nailed it Mr. Maina. The country is totally corrupt. All these politicians know very well that they have been getting away with the same corrupt actions as Sonko. What bother me is the way ordinary mwananchi has been compromised to believe in these people who have nothing in common with them. Just think about this: a person is able to hire a 12 legal team to represent him. What money?? What salary???? Some of these are current public officials who themselves would be in the same category as the accused????? Corrupted!!! That is our country. Even mbuzis are better. We no no longer think for ourselves. Critical thinking is alien to majority of our fellow wananchi. Keep a very keen eye on this catch and release of Sonko. The man has a long lap sheet. Now let us watch the judiciary side of this case, and so it goes.

Everything you have said is very true and correct. I have wondered many times why those who are exploited - mainly the poor - continue to blindly follow and worship those who are stealing from them. I tend to think the poor just keep hoping against hope that a guy like Sonko will some day do a particular miracle to uplift them from the dire chains of poverty. The poor are desperately so forgotten to a point they tend to lose their personal identity; simply who they are and how things can turn around for them without being beholden to the corrupt. Secondly, the old colonial mentality where the haves are worshipped by the poor masses lives on 56 years after Kenya became independent. Most poor people lack exposure to see how developed nations have evolved over time. I still think Kenya has a long way to go in attaining a level playing field for its citizens. But, a level playing field will not be achieved through those currently holding power and controls the tax payers money - it will have to come from the people themselves! It is the poor who will have to rise up and fight for the control of what is rightfully theirs and have to manage it themselves.

I didn't know Koni Hanene was Tangatanga damu, of all other people. His leader has made corruption look so cool. Just take some of the loot to the church!... and when the law tries to catch up with you, say it's 2022 politics.

To set the record straight I do not support Tangatanga or Kileweke movements. There are some characteristics which set a great leader apart from mediocre leaders and non of this leaders seem to have it. A great leader is characterized by the following characteristics: intentionality, Compassion, Humility, Integrity, Vision, Passion and strength. Also Great leaders have the discipline to follow through on commitments. The current leadership in Kenya is holders of KANU government and non of them is fit to hold a public office

The end of the heist - it beginning of the downfall so real as the law of gravity.

Later will be Sonko to sokwe mtu....cause of many issues that were covered with pride which by far over took sense in any form of way you may ponder of.
