Gov’t Orders 100,000 Body Bags Ahead of Projected Covid-19 Peak in Kenya

The government has ordered the procurement of 100,000 body bags in preparation for “worst-case” Covid-19 scenario.

This comes ahead of the projected August peak of infections, and a possible spike in the number of coronavirus-related fatalities.

On Friday, the death toll rose to 274 after 11 more patients succumbed to the virus. The number of infections also jumped to 16,268.

The Health Ministry placed the order for the body bags with Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (Kemsa), a State corporation tasked to procure all medical supplies.

The ministry in a memo seen by Sunday Nation specified that the bags must be doubled bagged and be made with heavy-duty vinyl Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic bag.

The bag, which is for the adult size, 40 by 90 inches of 0.4-millimeter thickness, must also have an envelope zipper and should be preferably white in color.

Kemsa CEO Jonah Manjari Mwangi told Sunday Nation that the agency is waiting for approval from the Health Ministry to commence the process of procuring the bags.

“We are waiting for the authority to incur expenditure. Once we have the permission from the Ministry, then we shall procure the bags,” he said.
