Diaspora Group Building Sh100 Billion Diaspora University Town in Kenya

A group of about 500 Kenyans living in the diaspora has embarked on a multi-billion-shilling project in Voi, Taita Taveta County.

Under the ambitious project dubbed Diaspora University Town (DUT), the group seeks to build a university, a hospital, and schools on a parcel of land donated by the ancestral community of Voi.

Conceived in 2006, the project has so far created hundreds of job opportunities for hundreds of residents and aims at improving the education and health sector as well as eradicating poverty and early pregnancies.

Dr. Phillip Musila Mutisya, a professor of education at North Carolina Central University, recently led the diaspora group in touring the site of the Sh100 billion project.

“The key milestone to success is to build a firm foundation in education. We can only achieve our goals by coming together and building a university, schools, and technical colleges and more so, improve on the health sector by coming up with equipped health facilities,” Dr. Musila said.

He added: “Irrespective of the good number of casual jobs we have created so far, we intend to create over 20,000 jobs which will be opened to all Kenyans. This will positively change the livelihoods of residents’ surrounding.”

"Many residents have voluntarily embraced the project and we have already enrolled them with NHIF and it is an initiative that has made them afford a smile with the daily wages they receive."

Another DUT founding member Dr. Christopher Kimaru, the professor of police and administration at North Carolina Central University, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project.

Dan Kamau a project strategist and Executive trustee said, “The residents have provided major support by embracing the initiative, and in return, it will benefit them too.”

DUT, which is being built on a 3,000-acre land, is expected to host 90,000 residents, 30,000 students, 500 SMEs.

Just a matter of time before all that money disappears in the hands of greedy kenyan leaving all those diaporans having worked double and tripples all in vain .

Great News! This is the spirit, and drive that will move Kenya forward. A true spirit of Harambee.I also hope that their efforts dot get frustrated, and derailed by corrupt officials.
Yes, this is the way to stop our sisters being enslaved in the Arab world.
Yes we can.

@maxley - now you can Ask your role model DP Ruto how he would classify this effort? Matakonomics, bottom-down, bottom-bottom, or just a concerted effort by a group of hard working diaspora Kenyans to do something quantifiable to created jobs for needy Kenyans?

This is a middle to upper level economic class of people doing something good without running to the politicians to give the project some stupid crazy labels. One of these guys can run for presidency because each of them know how to develop without stealing to bankrupt the project!

Here is the problem - the same run away politicians in Kenya will be trying to tear the project down as they hope to be bribed to get it out of the foundation!

Please @maxiley, what is bottom-down economic theory? Is it a theory to dig graves for the poor?

MP Alice Wahome called the matakonomics the “bottom-down, down, way down yonder development concept! Do you agree @maxiley?

Well, knowing that the lady mada’am is in her late 80s, do you really think she cares about the kandara youth or it is all about herself and retaining the kandara seat as a source of income? That@maxiley is your old auntie - so you surely know the answer!!

Of course it has taken time to build this baby because unlike your DP Ruto they did not steal from any body. It is all hard work, sweat, nearly blood and gut type of project! They are not buying glorifying stolen 100 milllion shilling each helicopters! It is all the reason we want to end corruption in Kenya so we can create a conducive environment to invest! Damn them crooked politicians!

Do you have you left similar project you put together at the beginning of 2021 and now is about complete? Kenyans and lack of vision!!! Damn if you do, damn if you don’t!

I can easily tell this fella whoever he is does not have a shilling save up in any bank world over! A poverty driven mentality at best!!!

When you have Shs 100B, you buy and build on your own land. There is no 3,000 acres of land owned by a "Voi ancestral community". With Shs 100B, donated land, will KUP still solicit donations?

Seneca (not verified)     Thu, 08/05/2021 @ 06:07pm

Very encouraging. THis is Taita Taveta...good honest souls, Even though Kenyattas and Criticos stole chunks of their land.

Why don’t you go run your mkokoteni business and build a fish kibanda at the shores of lake Victoria @shineke!?

You are pointing at others with your one stunted crooked finger while the other 4 fingers are pointing at your damn ugly face! What is holding you back except your very small mind?

Oh stfu you numb-heads! Kenyattas and a bunch of other Kyuks stole land in Taita Taveta - Ndung’u Report. You say old as if you are getting younger. My CNA job feeds me. You probably working under the table, although I suspect you are not even in the US you female hater.

Thousands of people in Kenya are living far much better quality of life running high class businesses (mostly run by Kikuyus), unlike you earning $10.00 per hour in the USA!

It is not just about feeding yourself! It is more important to create employment opportunities for others as well!

Have you done anything to create one single job where you are in Massachusetts?

Therefore do not drop your dirty trousers to “MOON” us for no reason! And yes, many of us back here at home lived there but we thought is more productive to return to Kenya to start businesses that help our people! I don’t miss the US one bit!

Why would any body hate you for living a risky life in the US while working long hours, and risking that a cop could put his knee on your neck to choke the shit out of your life??

Isn’t that the place you don’t even know who lives next do to you; your neighbor?? And you want me to be jealous of you??

Hei whomever you are @ceneca! Since you want to take a swipe at those who work “under the table”, please let me tell you something! I proudly work under the table and I will tell you a little something…! I will not insult you because I am here to advise you (help you out)! You sure do need help because you sound quite stuck-up!

I work roughly an average of 14 hours per day for six days every week! I get paid an average of $80.00 per hour as a certified electrician. I have worked this routine type work for the past 9 years without a vacation or break! please do the math!

Out of my hard work, I have build 32 nice rental apartments in various parts of Kenya —— all paid for! My average monthly rent is Kshs 12,000.00. A few of my rentals go for Shs 30k to 45k depending on the location! You do the math!!

The reason I have urgently invested in Kenya within a short time is because I am aware of temporary status!

Let me ask you @ceneca! What have you done for yourself since you work on “top of the table”?

Please cut your ignorance out because there are many who work “under the table” but they have done great things! When I return home, very soon, I will not need to work because I will be managing my investments with the help of several Kenyans that I have employed on full time basis!

I applaud your entrepreneurship but I'm curious where you work. My old neighbor was a lineman and only on overtime could he approach that wage. He was legal which means he couldn't be exploited like an under the table. The nature of the US is such that illegals and under the table get the smallest piece of the pie. Just saying.

A university for what 🤔the problem in Kenya is not lack of education but lack of jobs despite the education.Atleast the hospital if it is world class and is affordable to the locals maybe beneficial. For it to be world class the doctors should be trained and well paid so that they stay put instead of referring clients to their clinics or India where they earn kickbacks.Another cash cow for some educated diasporian who has found a new avenue to hoodwink his or her fellow diasporians.I guess the idea of residential plots has run its course. How about diverting some of that cash to help those poor patients chained to their beds in hospital because they cannot pay the bill .The government needs to force hospitals to come up with alternative methods to collect their money if the patient cannot afford

Well said, how many universities can a small country have? We are always quick to celebrate things without careful analysis and insulting those who point out the obvious. Yes the issue is not lack of education it is joblessness. Why not build a light manufacturing plant or a technical school aka jua kali- I see this being more valuable than useless degree minting another theory university. This to me is another cash cow for diasporas to milk since tuplotis are not happening . Will the university be free ?

MaragA (not verified)     Sun, 08/08/2021 @ 11:06am

Technical education or light manufacturing I would agree with. But I suspect the university will just be another center of liberal education adding more youths into the jobless economy. You are right.

There is nothing wrong with having a vision and being proactive. However, how is this group going to raise kSh. 100B? Or have they already raised the money-if yes, how did they do it? Secondly, since this is a community project, where can we find the feasibility study? Third, there is a government university in Taita Taveta! How will this project (university piece) be different from the already existing one? We have had several scandals involving this type of projects and questioning or asking for more information is not a crime. Let us not embrace projects blindly or put each other down for questioning the same. There are many investors who would like to be part of these types of projects, but their track records (projects) are questionable. Peace!
