Two people have been confirmed dead and scores others feared trapped after a building collapsed at Kihunguro area in Ruiru, Kiambu County on Wednesday.
Reports indicate that the two-storey building had been partially demolished by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to pave the way for the expansion of the Eastern By-pass.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that those trapped had gone into the condemned building to collect scrap metal when it caved in at around 10:00 am.
Kiambu County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha said two people have been confirmed dead and an operation to retrieve those trapped is underway.
The rescue operation is being conducted by officers from the Kiambu County fire brigade in collaboration with National Construction Authority (NCA) officers.
The team has also sought reinforcement from Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) and National Youth Service (NYS) to heighten rescue operations.
