ODM Delegates in Nairobi Endorse Winnie Odinga as Deputy Party Leader
Delegates of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Nairobi have endorsed East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga for the position of deputy party leader.
The endorsement was announced during a meeting of representatives from all 17 constituencies in the capital. Party officials said the move aims to fill a leadership gap in Nairobi following the death of former party leader Raila Odinga.
Makadara MP George Aladwa, who led the consultations, said the decision followed two months of discussions among grassroots leaders. He noted that ODM’s leadership structure is based on regional representation and that Nairobi currently lacks a voice at the top level.
Aladwa said the party believes Winnie Odinga is well placed to take up the role. Winnie Odinga entered regional politics in 2022 after her election to the EALA by Kenya’s Parliament.
She was sworn in at Arusha in December that year and is serving a five-year term ending in 2027. Her endorsement for the deputy leadership position marks an expansion of her role within the party.
The development comes as ODM continues to reorganise its leadership. In October 2025, the party’s Central Management Committee confirmed Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as party leader. He had been serving in an acting capacity following Raila Odinga’s death in India. Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said the decision was intended to stabilise the party during the transition.
