ODM’s Abdulswamad Nassir and Fernandes Barasa Win Mombasa and Kakamega Governor Races

Raila Odinga-led ODM party has won the Mombasa and Kakamega gubernatorial elections held on Monday.

In Mombasa, immediate former Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir was declared the governor-elect after garnering 119,082 votes, defeating his closest challenger UDA’s Hassan Omar Hassan, who got 98,180 votes.

Nassir will succeed outgoing Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho, who has served for two terms since 2013.

Businessman Fernandes Barasa of ODM was declared the winner of the Kakamega governor race after securing 192,929 votes ahead of his main rival Cleophas Malala of ANC, who got 159,508.

In the Rongai parliamentary election, incumbent MP Raymond Kipruto Moi lost to UDA candidate Paul "Mamba" Chebor. Chebor garnered 27,021 votes while Moi managed 14,725.

In Pokot South Constituency, incumbent David Pkosing of Kenya Union Party (KUP) won the election with 28,250 votes, trouncing UDA’s Simon Kalekem who got 15,298 votes.

Elsewhere David Mwalika of Wiper Party retained his Kitui Rural parliamentary seat after flooring Charles Nyamai of UDA. Mwalika got 19,745 votes against Nyamai’s 10,177 votes.

In Kacheliba parliamentary election, Kenya Union Party’s Titus Lotee defeated incumbent MP Mark Lomunokol, who contested on a UDA party ticket. Lotee garnered 20,073 votes against Lomunokol’s 17,963 votes.

Elections in the above areas were postponed by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) following a mix-up of ballot materials during the August 9th general election.

Muuaji Raila should file two petitions challenging the elections of Nasir and Barasa as governors on the grounds that Chebukati rigged them in.
