A 24-year-old man from Tana River County has reportedly eloped with his father’s bride-to-be, claiming the girl is too young for him.
Ahmed Golo from Magarjali village fled with 18-year-old Saada Mohammed, who was to wed Ishmael Golo, 71, after Ramadan, Nation reported.
Hassan Wario, a family member, said the elderly man had already visited Saada’s parents and paid her dowry but was unable to wed her due to the fasting period.
“He agreed with the girl’s parents that the rest of the ceremony would take place after Ramadhan, the first week after Eid,” he said.
It is alleged that the man’s children were opposed to the union, arguing that the girl was younger than their last-born but the father insisted on marrying her.
Wario said efforts to convince the children to accept their dad’s decision were in valid, leading to a family dispute.
“We tried to persuade them, but they refused. Even their mothers tried to calm them down, but they wouldn’t listen, especially the daughters,” he said.
Ahmed, the firstborn of Golo’s second wife, approached the girl and escaped with her on Tuesday as everyone was rushing to the mosque for prayers.
“We only realized she was missing around 10 am because we could not find her, all we found was a note written in our language, but the handwriting was not hers,” said Saada’s sister Asha Fadhe.
The following day, Ahmed called home and maintained that he would not allow his father to dishonor them by marrying the teenager.
“He says he will marry the girl and have children with her before he returns home. I tried to tell him it is not right, but he says the girl has agreed and is happier that he saved her,” his mother said.
Saada’s relatives said she contacted them and informed them that she was safe.
Golo blamed his first and third wives, accusing them of inciting the children against his marriage. He has since asked the girl’s family to return the dowry he paid.

@ Imara-Suluhisho, I chance to say that mzee is a muslim. If Iam correct,he is just following the footsteps of his prophet Mohammad.Iam sure you recall that the prophet-whom muslims say is the perfect example of morality, for all mankind ,married Aisha when she was 6 years old,and climbed on top of her when she was 9 years old.He was 54 at the time.To mzee's credit, this young woman was at least "very' mature"-twice as old as Aisha was...
@ Ndugu Imara-Suluhisho, all I can say is that there is alot of disfunctional individuals in that family.Even if I thought that my mzee was about to marry an 18 year old, there is no way I would think of wresting her out of his arms.I also question the mental state of this young girl, granted she is 18 years old. How could she flip flop from father to son in a twinking of an eye?
Back to the prophet-Can you imagine walking on the street with a six year old,and telling people that ,"this is my latest wife".How many 6 year olds understand what marriage is anyway?Obviously this act of the prophet has ashamed so many muslims to the point of defending the practise as an old custom. But the prophet is the for all times right? So what we are seeing here is the out come of the actions of the prophet. In fact from my readings, this practise is very common in places like Afghanistan. It's only the law that can intervene and discontinue this age disparity marriages. The law should forbid a 30 year gap unless the parties involved are over 35 years of age. Many will agree that anyone 35 years or over has lived and experirented enough to know what they want,as opposed to an 18 year old. What say you?

Sasa huu ni utamaduni au ni dini? Kwani wana wa kike hawana dhamani!
Good for him. Young men should marry young women.
Young men don’t let greedy old men steal the women of your youth.
Ndugu @Maxiley:
You are indeed a closet philosopher. Please, take time to write a book that will not only be your legacy on your short tenure on earth, but it will be an inspiration to the many generations to come after your final exit on planet earth comes.
Culture to me is like an invisible jail. I’ve to be careful about what I say about the late Ndugu Mohammed and his mother Aminah. Why? I don’t want my head to be separated from my shoulders😳.
Do you remember what happened to Mr. Rashid when a young follower of Mohammed’s religion made an attempt to terminate his life in Upper State New York?
This time, I will not express my innermost feelings about this marriage, especially this time when the “mentally hacked followers” of this religion are fasting🤭😳.
I hear you@ Ndugu Imara-suluhisho. Interesting about the book. When I was in high school many years ago, prompted by minds like yours,I had stated writing a book, but never finished.Got distracted...Something to think about actually.I am sure I can count on you to buy at least one.
Truth be told, when I started commenting on this forum,I hardly knew anything about Islam.Infact you guided me toward educating my self in that department after reading your comments about religion.Especially the foreign religions of Islam and Christianity. So I thank you.
As for your head being separated from your head because you said the truth, makes me wonder about the mentality of those who would do something like that.Anyway, I dare any muslim to deny what I have written here. This stuff is from their muslim scholars. So if any head chopping has to be done, its to those who wrote this stuff.RIght?
Guesty, it is good you are using the word, "should'. In practice, romance doesn't know age. In fact, nobody in the world knows romance formula. Most relationships/ marriage fail when ages of the partners are very close. That tells that the wider the age gap, the sweeter the relationship.
Great solution!! No need to return the dowry already paid! I am sure if the old man loved the teenage girl he’ll be happy that she’s her daughter in law!
I can understand his children being opposed to the marriage. If it was an arranged or forced marriage, the son did the right thing, but if it was consensual, then leave the old man alone.
I don't see anything wrong with older men or older women marrying younger people.
Don't forget, even old cats drink milk.
@ Kora kanini, you made my day ," even old cats drink milk".That's a new one to me...
If both(the old man ad the young girl)are of legal age(over 18 years) age should never be a factor. Come on, this is Viagra age!!!!. Viagra and Cialis were game changer because they enhance sex life which is naturally given and therefore the old man knew what he was doing. Now that man(or boy) earned himself a curse from his dad for taking his woman because naturally he shouldn't sleep with a woman his father has slept with
Ni tabia mbaya sana za mwanamume kumuoa msichana ambaye kwa umri ni kama "mjukuu" wake.

Tabia mbovu kama hizi ni lazima zikomeshwe kila mahali duniani sasa.
