Moses Kuria Unfit to Hold Office, Opposition Says

The Opposition has called on Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria to step down from his post. 

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has urged the Senate to determine Kuria as being unfit to serve in such a prominent position. The ODM Secretary-General has put forward a motion to censure the CS for his sustained aggressive comments towards the media. Mr Sifuna called on the administration of President William Ruto to clarify that Kuria's words are his own individual opinions and are not the official viewpoint of the Kenyan government.

"We want an assurance to be made to the media in this country that their freedom as enshrined in the Constitution shall be safeguarded regardless of their opinions and views on national issues," said Mr Sifuna. 

The Senate deputy minority whip speaking on Monday expressed great worry over the increasing notoriety of Kuria, noting that his contentious, insulting and degrading language is causing unease. He continued that the CS has decided to take out a vendetta against the Nation Media Group for failure to broadcast the regime's lies and false pledges. The MP added that Kuria had also posted a picture on his certified social media accounts to cheer the decline in the NMG's stock price on the same day.

"An attack on one media house, as history has shown in other jurisdictions, often leads to attacks on press freedom as a whole," said Mr Sifuna. 

He declared that the Constitution's Article 34 (2) ensures the freedom of the press by stating that the government is not permitted to manage or intervene with any individual involved in the broadcasting, production or circulation of any publication.
