Kenyan-Born Surgeon Philip Munda Shines on MasterChef South Africa

Kenyan-born surgeon Philip Munda, now based in South Africa, has gained recognition both in medicine and in competitive cooking after appearing on MasterChef South Africa.

Munda’s early life remains partly unclear, and his specific county of origin in Kenya has not been publicly confirmed. His surname suggests Luhya heritage, where “Munda” traditionally refers to the firstborn child. He moved to South Africa at a young age, where he continued his education and began the path that led to his medical career.

He studied medicine at University of Cape Town and later pursued advanced surgical training at University of the Witwatersrand. He eventually qualified as a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa, a credential that recognises senior surgical expertise.

Alongside his work in medicine, Munda developed a strong interest in cooking. What began as a personal hobby grew into a serious pursuit. He later competed on the television programme MasterChef South Africa, where he presented inventive dishes and demonstrated calm decision-making under pressure.

Other public figures have also combined demanding careers with an interest in food. Actor Stanley Tucci has written about Italian cuisine and hosted a travel and food series. Rapper Snoop Dogg has appeared in a cooking programme alongside Martha Stewart. Technology entrepreneur Jack Dorsey has also spoken about his interest in food culture.
