Kenya–USA Tech Forum to Connect Diaspora Talent With Kenya's Digital Future

The Kenya–USA Tech Forum will take place at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, from 24 to 26 June 2026, bringing together Kenyan-American technology professionals, academics and investors for the Diaspora Innovation and AI Conference.

The event is intended to serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, investment and strategic partnerships between the Kenyan diaspora and the country’s growing digital economy. Organisers say the focus extends beyond remittances, with greater emphasis on intellectual capital, advanced technical expertise and venture funding to support Kenya’s technology sector.

A central theme of the conference is cross-border technology transfer. Diaspora engineers, machine learning specialists and cloud computing experts, including professionals working at major technology companies, are expected to engage with innovators in Kenya.

Discussions will focus on developing solutions in artificial intelligence, fintech, agriculture and digital infrastructure, while strengthening remote work opportunities that connect Kenyan developers to international projects. Kenya’s startup ecosystem provides an important context for these discussions.

Unlike traditional small businesses, startups are designed for rapid growth and often address challenges across multiple markets. The success of M-Pesa remains a prominent example.

What began as a mobile money service has become a key driver of financial inclusion, expanding access to financial services for millions of people. The forum aims to encourage similar growth by linking diaspora expertise with local entrepreneurship.

Investment will also be a major focus. Diaspora investors are increasingly directing capital towards high-growth technology ventures rather than traditional sectors. This shift reflects growing confidence in Kenya’s ability to develop startups capable of competing internationally while addressing challenges specific to Africa.

The conference will also examine ways to address the long-standing issue of brain drain. Organisers describe the event as an effort to promote “brain gain” by creating channels through which skills, expertise and opportunities can flow back to Kenya. Around 200 participants, including investors, policymakers and technology leaders, are expected to attend.

The forum is expected to support discussions on adapting artificial intelligence systems to African contexts through the use of local languages, relevant data and inclusive digital infrastructure.
