Who Is Oketch Salah? The Man Gaining Ground in Kenya’s Post-Odinga Politics
Oketch Salah, once a largely unknown figure in Migori, has rapidly ascended to a prominent role in Kenya’s political landscape, positioning himself as a key player in the wake of Raila Odinga’s declining health and subsequent death.
His rise, marked by close associations with high-profile political figures, has raised both questions and intrigue about the nature of his influence. Salah's visibility increased notably during Odinga’s medical treatments abroad, when he took on an active role in managing the former Prime Minister’s affairs.
Initially a private companion, Salah's presence soon extended into the public sphere, where he became a fixture at key political events. His high-profile lifestyle, including helicopter arrivals and meetings with top officials, further cemented his status as a figure of note.
His social media presence, launched shortly before Odinga's death, became a visual record of his increasing influence, documenting encounters with world leaders and moments shared with the Odinga family. The symbolism of Salah’s rise is clear. His arrival by helicopter at Raila Odinga’s sister’s funeral in Bondo marked a decisive shift into the public eye.
He was later photographed with Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa discussing mining and energy opportunities, and also appeared alongside President William Ruto and Dr Oburu Oginga at State House. These appearances, exceptional for someone with no formal political position, have raised questions about the networks enabling his access to such circles.
Within the Odinga family, some remain puzzled by his sudden prominence, with Raila's sister Ruth admitting she did not know him well. Salah’s roots in Migori are tied to his father, Abdi Salah, a successful businessman who played a key role in developing the town’s infrastructure in the 1970s.
After attending Migori Boys, Salah left school under unclear circumstances, but his family’s business legacy has been a foundation for his own ventures. He is now involved in gold mining in Nyatike, a sector where political connections are crucial.
The rapidity of Salah’s rise has prompted mixed reactions. Some view him as an opportunist, while others regard him as a loyal companion to Raila Odinga in his final days. Dr Oburu Oginga, in particular, has publicly endorsed Salah, calling him “a son of Raila” and highlighting his role in the political future of the Odinga family.
