Cyrus Jirongo Died from Blunt Force Trauma, Post-Mortem Reveals

Former Cabinet Minister Cyrus Jirongo has died from severe injuries sustained in a road crash on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

A post-mortem examination at Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi confirmed that Jirongo suffered catastrophic trauma to his chest and abdomen, injuries that were deemed unsurvivable by medical experts. The autopsy, overseen by Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor and family-appointed specialists, revealed extensive damage, including a perforated heart, ruptured blood vessels, and injuries to the liver and spinal cord.

Dr Joseph Ndung’u, who conducted the examination, stated that Jirongo died from blunt force trauma and crush injuries. The crash occurred at approximately 2am on 13 December near Karai, Naivasha.

Initial police investigations suggest Jirongo’s vehicle collided head-on with a public service bus operated by Climax Company Limited. The impact forced his car about 25 metres from the scene, while the bus came to a stop nearly 50 metres away.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are conducting a thorough inquiry into the incident. Evidence gathered from the scene and CCTV footage from a nearby petrol station suggest that Jirongo’s vehicle briefly stopped before the crash and then turned back toward Nairobi, moments before the bus collided with it.

The bus driver has been questioned and released on cash bail, with further investigations underway. The DCI is also examining Jirongo's activities leading up to the crash, including his attendance at a meeting in Nairobi that evening.
