Ruto: My Bond with Mt Kenya Is Strong and Unshaken

President William Ruto has reaffirmed his political alliance with the Mt Kenya region, saying efforts to divide him from its voters will not succeed.

Speaking on Sunday at ACK St Paul’s Church Kariki in Othaya, Nyeri County, the President said his administration remains firmly grounded in the support Mt Kenya residents gave him during the 2022 General Election. He told congregants that some individuals were attempting to weaken that relationship but said their efforts would fail.

Mr Ruto said the partnership formed during the election was strong and enduring, adding that his presidency was made possible by the votes from the region. He pledged to continue working closely with Mt Kenya leaders and communities.

He outlined the priorities he said matter most to residents, including education, agriculture, business development, infrastructure and reliable energy supply. The President said his performance in these areas would be judged at the next election.

“I know the test is in 2027 and everybody will be assessed according to the work they have done,” he said.

Referring to local political culture, Mr Ruto said voters in Nyeri choose leaders based on their plans and track record rather than personal appeal. His remarks appeared to respond to critics who have questioned his leadership.

Among those critics is former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, once Mr Ruto’s closest ally in the region. Mr Gachagua has increasingly positioned himself as a defender of Mt Kenya interests, accusing the President of sidelining local leaders and failing to address development concerns.

He has also claimed that government appointments and policy decisions have alienated the region, presenting himself as its genuine representative. The breakdown of their relationship has turned a former alliance into open political rivalry, with Mr Gachagua warning that support for the President in Mt Kenya is declining.

The church service was attended by several senior leaders, including Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development Mutahi Kagwe, Senator Wahome Wamatinga and Woman Representative Rahab Mukami.
