Family Mourns Kenyan Man Who Died in Russia, Warns Against Dubious Job Offers

The family of a Kenyan man known as Charles has confirmed that he died in Russia, ending weeks of uncertainty over his whereabouts.

In a statement, relatives said they had received verified information confirming his death while abroad. The family said the news has deeply affected his mother and extended relatives, who are now preparing to mourn him. Memorial events are planned in Nyeri County, including a candle-lighting ceremony at the family home in Kinuri Village on 4 February, followed by a requiem mass and memorial service the next day.

Evening prayers are also being held in Kamulu and Kinuri kwa Wajuma.

Charles’ body will not be returned to Kenya, and the family will commemorate him symbolically. They said the circumstances surrounding his death raise serious concerns about the nature of his recruitment and travel to Russia.

According to the family, Charles was recruited with the promise of work as a heavy machinery operator on an airport construction project. Instead, they allege that he was taken directly to a conflict area upon arrival. Communication with him became irregular and later stopped entirely before confirmation of his death was received.

Relatives claim the recruitment was carried out by an individual operating within church networks in Kayole, which they say created an appearance of trust and legitimacy. They warned that such associations can make it easier to deceive young people seeking employment opportunities.

The family urged Kenyans to be cautious of overseas job offers, even when they come through familiar community or religious connections. They highlighted warning signs such as rushed travel arrangements, limited information about contracts, and pressure to keep plans confidential.

They called on prospective job seekers to verify all foreign employment opportunities through official government channels and to involve family members before making decisions to travel abroad. The family said they are sharing Charles’ story to prevent others from facing similar risks.
