UK Introduces Visa Refunds and Faster Expansion Visas to Draw Global Talent
The UK government has introduced two measures to support business growth and attract skilled international workers, including visa fee reimbursements for eligible employers and faster sponsor licence approvals for overseas firms.
Under the new Visa Fees Reimbursement Scheme for Scale-Ups, qualifying UK businesses can reclaim costs linked to hiring foreign workers. The scheme is available to companies in priority sectors including clean energy, life sciences and digital technology. To qualify, firms must demonstrate annual growth of more than 20 per cent over three consecutive years and hold a valid sponsor licence.
Eligible businesses can claim up to £25,000 each year, with a maximum of £5,000 per international recruit, including dependants. The scheme covers visa costs incurred from 9 June 2026 onwards. Applications will open on 16 June, and funding will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis until March 2027.
The government has also launched a fast-track referral process for overseas companies planning to establish operations in the UK. With support from the Office for Investment, qualifying firms can obtain sponsor licences for UK Expansion Workers in as little as ten working days, compared with the standard processing time of up to eight weeks.
To be eligible, companies must operate in priority sectors and meet at least one growth requirement. These include raising £1 million in venture capital funding, committing £2 million to UK expansion plans, or taking part in a recognised high-growth programme. Applications that require additional scrutiny will continue to follow the standard process.
The measures are expected to reduce recruitment costs for UK employers and encourage greater use of visa routes such as Skilled Worker, Global Talent and Scale-up visas. Faster sponsor licence approvals could also help overseas businesses move senior executives and specialist staff to the UK more quickly, reducing delays to expansion projects.
Indian professionals may benefit from the changes as UK employers become more willing to sponsor overseas workers. Opportunities are likely to increase in sectors such as technology, healthcare, engineering and scientific research, where demand for skilled workers remains strong.
