Wamuchomba Quits UDA Over Claims of Tribal Attacks
Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has announced that she will not seek re-election on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
Speaking at Parliament Buildings on Thursday, Wamuchomba said she had decided to leave the ruling party after consulting her supporters and reflecting on her political position. She said she could no longer associate herself with a political party whose actions, in her view, conflicted with the values she expected from national leaders.
Wamuchomba cited concerns about ethnic hostility in political discourse and what she described as an inconsistent response by government institutions. She said she had expected authorities to take firm action against leaders accused of making divisive remarks but was dissatisfied with how some cases had been handled.
She argued that some leaders had faced legal consequences over statements similar to those made by others in government circles, which she said raised questions about fairness and accountability.
“After soul searching, with my voters I feel my conscious does not allow me to dine and associate with people who have no regards to other communities,” Wamuchomba said.
Despite leaving UDA, the MP confirmed that she intends to remain in elective politics and seek a third consecutive term representing Githunguri. She did not disclose which political party or coalition she would join for the next election. Instead, she said she would continue consulting her constituents before deciding on her next political platform. Wamuchomba has previously taken positions that differed from those of the government on several contentious issues.
