Kenyan Diaspora Mourns Gilbert Olet, Father of Digital Creator Lydia Tett Olet
Gilbert Olet, the father of UK-based Kenyan digital creator Lydia Tett Olet, died on 9 October 2026 at the age of 81 following a brief illness.
His death has left relatives and friends in Kenya, the United Kingdom and the United States mourning a man remembered for his dedication to family, public service and community life. Gilbert was married to Grace Olet, who lives in the United States, and had five children living across the three countries. Lydia and Agnes Fredrick are based in the United Kingdom, while Janety Quee lives in the United States. Steve Olet and Jackline Olet remain in Kenya.
The family described Gilbert as a central figure whose guidance and support helped keep relatives connected despite the distances separating them. His influence extended across generations, with his children and other family members remembering him for the role he played in their lives.
Gilbert began his career at Kenya Breweries before joining the Kenya Post Office, where he worked until his retirement. His career spanned a period when postal services were an important part of Kenya’s communications infrastructure, connecting people and communities across the country.
Away from work, he was a passionate football supporter, with a particular loyalty to Gor Mahia, one of Kenya’s most successful and widely supported clubs. His love for the team remained one of his defining personal interests. In a tribute, his family expressed their grief while reflecting on the memories and values he had left behind.
“Dad, our hearts ache, but we will forever treasure your memory and the place you hold in our family. You are deeply loved and will be dearly missed. Rest peacefully,” the family said.
As relatives and friends mourn his passing, Gilbert is remembered as a devoted father, trusted friend and respected family elder.
