20 Kenyan-based fashion start-ups have been selected for the third class of the British Council’s Creative DNA Program.
Launched in 2020, the program is funded by the Foreign Commonwealth Office to develop skills, knowledge, and global networks for local fashion designers.
The British Council said the fashion start-ups will be assessed on their progress and potential, and at the end of the incubator, 10 entrepreneurs will be awarded Sh3 million in seed grant funding to help them innovate and chart a new path for their businesses.
This year’s cohort includes Akiba Studios, Molivian, Matia Kenya, Aert Fashion, Vaa Ke; Oye, Amagove Mugere, Mago Got You, Uncommon Rebel, and Tribal Trends.
Others are The Label Saba, Tausi Conde, Bonkerz Nrb, Mrembo Africa, Theresia Kyallo, Alegohono, True Denim Collection, African Yuva Solutions, Hisi Studio, and The Bold Latte.
“The cohort will have the opportunity to access and interact with a global network of fashion experts, mentors, corporate clients, and partners in Kenya and the UK, as well as test the demand for their products through a pop-up shop in Kenya and online sales in the UK facilitated by the project delivery partner Fashion Scout London,” said the British Council.
The incubator will culminate in a fashion showcase in June where the entrepreneurs will present their brand collections to potential partners.
Since its launch, the program has incubated 31 fashion businesses that have seen their businesses grow through linkage with the UK market.
