Kenyan Journalist Larry Madowo Delivers Lecture at Canada’s Carleton University
US-based Kenyan journalist Larry Madowo on Friday made history after he delivered a lecture at Canada’s Carleton University.
Madowo, who is a North America correspondent for the BBC, became the first-ever black person to deliver an address in the university’s annual School of Journalism keynotes, which have been held for the past 24 years.
Through Twitter, Madowo thanked the head of the Journalism program at Carleton, Prof. Allan Thompson for inviting him.
“Learnt that I’m the first-ever Black person to deliver a lecture in the 24 years Canada’s Carleton University School of Journalism has held annual keynotes.”
“It was a great honor. I’m grateful to Prof Allan and his School for inviting me and the Stursberg family for supporting them,” he wrote.
In the lecture delivered virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Madowo shared his experience covering the chaotic 2007 presidential election in Kenya.
He related it to the political turmoil experienced in the US following the recently-held 2020 presidential elections, where incumbent Donald Trump of the Republican Party has alleged rigging and refused to recognize the legitimacy of his Democratic counterpart Joe Biden’s victory.
He further acknowledged the work done by journalists who report what they witness in conflicting areas.

The problem with black Africans is the arrogant desire to tune their horns as the first blacks in everything.it is amsuch a shame for a whole bbc journalist to start pulling the “first” in everything crap??? How about Jeff Koinange, etc who have been there, done, and revisited??
You can essentially see how this niger feels privileged to addressed this white group of journalists!! What should late President Obama’s father then about his many “firsts”?? And Ochuef Aneko “first” at the Lancaster House in England?? Is Madowo now the new Martin Luther King??
What is the difference between Madowo’s address and that of a white man?? Madowo’s attitude of insecurity as as a less learned black student of history betrays a lot of other blacks who are not yet free from within! That is a total package of madowo’s shallow mind set! Every he does is the “first” as far as the black community in concerned!

Let Midowo and other Africans emphasize their firsts. I don't know if you remember the History classes in most African countries including Kenya. Remember this:
1. Who was the first European to see Mt. Kenya?
2. Who discovered the Nile River?
3. Do you know the first European to Discover Victoria Falls?
So my friend, Let the firsts be the first. Do you know who is the first Kenyan to discover Britain is?
