Canada-based Kenyan entrepreneur Lucy Njeri is pioneering innovative hair care solutions specifically designed for African women.
Her company, Curls Defined, emerged from a personal journey of addressing a notable market gap in specialized hair care products. Njeri's entrepreneurial venture was born out of personal need and professional insight. While navigating life in North America, she encountered persistent challenges in finding hair care products that adequately addressed the unique characteristics of African hair textures.
This limitation prompted her to undertake an extensive research and development process, during which she crafted and refined her product formulations over approximately eighteen months. The inspiration behind Curls Defined is deeply rooted in Njeri's professional and personal experiences. She observed that existing market offerings were predominantly developed without a genuine understanding of African hair's distinctive properties.
"The beauty industry has predominantly marketed products without truly comprehending the intricate requirements of Black women's hair," Njeri remarks, highlighting the critical need for specialized, culturally informed hair care solutions.
Distinguished by its commitment to quality and authenticity, Curls Defined distinguishes itself through strategic sourcing of organic ingredients from various African countries. This approach ensures product formulations are not only effective but also free from potentially harmful chemical compounds. According to Njeri the brand simultaneously addresses hair health and mitigates potential reproductive and dermatological risks by prioritizing natural ingredients.
"Our hair is different, and it needs something different," she explains. "I wanted to create something that was specifically for us (Black women) to help us embrace our natural beauty with products that actually work. The mission behind Curls Defined is to simplify natural hair care for African women, making it easier for them to manage their hair and feel confident." She says.
Njeri's broader mission transcends product development as she aims to empower African women to embrace and confidently manage their natural hair.
