Six Killed, 30 Injured as Bus Crashes Into Truck in Kericho
Six people were killed and at least 30 others injured on Tuesday morning when a passenger bus collided with a truck at Fort Ternan in Kericho County.
Police said the Busia-bound Uwezo bus, which was travelling from Nairobi, rammed into the rear of a truck along the Londiani–Muhoroni road. The bus driver was among those who died at the scene. Kericho Police Commander James Ngetich confirmed that the injured passengers were taken to Londiani Sub-County Hospital and Kericho County Referral Hospital with injuries of varying severity.
Rescue efforts involving police officers and emergency responders lasted more than two hours as survivors were removed from the wreckage. The crash caused a major traffic disruption on the Kericho–Kisumu corridor, with vehicles backed up for several kilometres.
The accident occurred at Fort Ternan, an area previously identified by authorities as a high-risk section of the road. The Londiani–Muhoroni route has a history of serious crashes, particularly involving long-distance public transport vehicles.
The incident followed another fatal collision earlier the same day at Karai in Naivasha, where ten people lost their lives. Together, the two crashes resulted in sixteen deaths within a 24-hour period. In recent days, five people were killed in Kikopey, while fifteen others were injured in a separate accident at Karai.
On the Nairobi–Nakuru highway in Kimende, students travelling in a Guardian bus were injured after the vehicle veered off the road and landed in a ditch. The series of accidents has coincided with increased traffic as travellers return from upcountry following the festive season.
Road safety organisations have raised concerns about driver training standards, with the Motorists Association of Kenya calling for stricter oversight of driving schools. The association says some schools fail to adequately train drivers in highway and night driving despite recording high pass rates.
