Kenyan Community Gathers in Peterborough, UK to Celebrate Life of Dr Matthew Karangi
Kenyan community members in Peterborough will gather on Sunday, 7 December, for a memorial service honouring Dr Matthew Muriuki Karangi at Sacred Heart and Saint Oswald’s Parish in Walton.
The service, which begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be led by Father Seelan, is expected to bring together friends, colleagues, and community members reflecting on Dr Karangi’s long-standing contributions to education and diaspora life. Widely known as “Daktari,” he died on Friday, 5 December at 3:30 p.m., surrounded by family and close friends.
At the time of his passing, Dr Karangi was teaching Religious Studies at John Fisher School in Peterborough, where he was valued for his depth of knowledge and commitment to mentoring students. His career extended across several countries, including work with the Missionary Institute London, service as Vice Rector with the Consolata Missionaries, and academic research on religion and politics in Africa.
He also spent time teaching and undertaking pastoral work in Brazil and other parts of the UK. Former students and colleagues have described him as a supportive and unifying presence, noting his generosity and ability to guide those adapting to life away from home. Many within the Kenyan diaspora credit him with offering steady leadership and a sense of connection during challenging transitions.
The family has requested financial support to assist with funeral arrangements. Contributions may be made to an account under the name Justinah Wanjohi (Sort Code: 77-72-16, Account Number: 45599862). The Funeral Organising Committee has thanked the community for its messages of sympathy and continued assistance.
