The death of renowned social media personality Brian Chira has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his fans and loved ones.
Chira was celebrated for his witty quotes and signature catchphrases. Last weekend, Chira's life was abruptly cut short in a hit-and-run accident that has since sent shockwaves through the Kenyan online community. As the news of Chira's passing spread, an outpouring of grief and remembrance swept across the nation. Today, hundreds of supporters, clad in t-shirts adorned with his memorable quotes, gathered at the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary to pay their respects and bid a final farewell to the fallen icon.
The sombre occasion was marked by a shared sense of loss and a deep appreciation for the impact Chira had on their lives. Chira's body was adorned in a graduation gown, a request made by his grandmother before being transported from the Kenyatta University mortuary to Githunguri, Kiambu where he will be laid to rest. The journey to his final resting place was accompanied by throngs of followers. In a remarkable display of solidarity and generosity, the Kenyan TikTok community rallied and raised Sh8 million to support Chira's grandmother.
This outpouring of love and support has been both celebrated and scrutinized, with some Kenyans expressing mixed feelings about the type of support given during and after Chira's death, calling for more genuine care and concern while people are still alive. Among those paying tribute to Chira's legacy is Rose Atieno, better known as Nyako, a fellow TikToker who shared a close bond with the late content creator. Nyako decided to honour his memory in a deeply personal and poignant manner dressing in a sombre black suit, a tribute to Chira's fondness for formal attire.
As the soft melody of Amos and Josh's popular song "Baadaye" played in the background, Nyako lit a candle and released balloons to symbolize the collective grief and respect for the life that has been lost. The outpouring of grief extended beyond Nyako's heartfelt tribute with Terrence Creative joining the online community in mourning the content creator. In an emotional Instagram post, Terrence shared his connection to the tragedy, revealing that he, too, had experienced the challenges of growing up as an orphan raised by his grandmother.
I had never heard of Chira before but it sounds like he was a young man full of talent and a promising future. RIP.
