Police have arrested close to 100 immigrants in various operations as the government intensifies crackdown on illegal foreigners in Kenya.
The swoop comes after recent orders by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i who wants the aliens removed from the country before the end of November.
In an operation in Eldoret town, police nabbed 42 immigrants from different countries including Sudan, Uganda, Egypt and Nigeria.
"Following the ongoing operation on illegal immigrants as per the directive given by Interior CS Fred Matiangi, we arrested 42 immigrants, most of them operating different businesses in town without the required documents,’’ Eldoret OCPD Richard Omanga said.
The foreigners will remain in custody of police pending vetting by a multi-agency task force. “The operation will continue until all illegal immigrants are arrested,” said Omanga.
In a similar swoop, Eastern Regional Security committee arrested 50 illegal immigrants from various countries masquerading as small traders.
“Most of them come here only to become a security threat without the knowledge of the public. We arrested some who were pretending to be in the business of selling electronics eg, Chinese gambling machines among others. One of them had been integrated into a village football club in Makueni County. Others had gotten residences deep in the rural areas. We are coming for you,” warned Eastern Regional Coordinator Wycliffe Ogallo.
