Court Awards Dennis Itumbi Sh5 Million for Arrest over ICC Email Hacking Claims

The High Court on Tuesday awarded Sh5 million to State House Director of Digital Communications Dennis Itumbi as compensation for illegal arrest and detention by police in 2012.

In his case, Itumbi had sued the government over his arrest and detention without trial over allegations of hacking an email belonging the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) prosecution office in 2012.

In his suit against Attorney General Githu Muigai, Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett, Itumbi was seeking to be awarded Sh50 million as damages for the violation of his rights.

He further sought court protection from any further arrest or prosecution in relation to the issues, claiming he is still under surveillance by the investigators even after President Kenyatta’s case at the Hague-based court was terminated.

It was alleged that Itumbi had hacked the ICC prosecution's email to reveal the identities of key witnesses that had been lined up to testify against the President.
