Kenya Lobbies for US Support for Slot in United Nations Security Council

Kenya has announced it will be fronting its candidature for a slot in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) at the 74th session of the UN General Assembly to be held in September 2019.

The revelation came as United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visited the country on Friday for bilateral talks with President Kenyatta. Kenya will use Tillerson’s visit to sell her candidature ahead of the vote during UNGA meeting to be held in New York.

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma said Kenya’s candidature is informed by the critical role the UN Security Council play in global peace and stability.

“We shall be seeking for a seat in the United Nations Security Council for the period of 2021-2022,” she said.

“Kenya’s candidature to the United Nations Security Council is informed by the critical role that we continue to play in maintaining global peace and stability,” Ambassador Juma said

“As a country we believe that peace, security and development are interlinked and mutually reinforcing, and neither can be achieved without the other,” Ambassador Juma said.

“Even as we go through the candidature process, we look forward to cooperating with all countries for more robust engagement on issues of peace and stability and where Africa’s and developing countries sustainable development is realised,” added Juma.

UNSC has five permanent members and ten non-permanent membership slots. Ethiopia currently holds one of the non-permanent positions, while Ivory Coast non-permanent membership starts in 2019.

China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, and the United States form the five permanent members with veto powers.

Kenya has twice been a non-permanent member of the council in the years 1973-1974 and 1997-1998.

Interesting how the continent of Africa with 1.2 billion people is not permanently represented. Equally interesting is India with population of 1.3b is not permanently represented . What criteria is used? Russia+ Britain+ France+ US have a combined population of less than 700 Million people only 🤔.This population is permanently represented.

Damn! Yes, why. Hadn't looked at it from this angle before. Looks like a permanent seat at the UN is directly proportionate to the wealth, influence, political power and nuklear capability of a country. Not population.

Ndio Bob Marley na ma-banghi zake alituimbia 'Africa Unite'. He knew if we do, 1st and foremost Europe will be the new 3rd world continent. Those mofos don't have sheit apart from kondoo mob tu sana. They still depend on raw materials from Africa and don't have enough land to feed themselves.
That's why Gaddafi had to go and that bugger Africa calls 'mtu wetu' Obama made it happen. How ironic. We still kill each other in high places.
But we were getting better. Back in 1997 when I was trying to read a lot of books so that I can get paid a lot of money and call myself a professional, I met a kalasinga mlevi sana (told me to call him Sadarji or he'll chop me to pieces with his Kirpan aka njora). Used to drink vodka and eat cheese to nyorosha matumbo with Mafuta ndio isichomwe ni vodoo. Tried it, niliharwo mbaya!!
Anyway, the sadarji told me and my buddy Wachira Mukorino.. 'Thee next century Asia vill be no.1. And China and India vill be king vof thee world. Next century after is vor you Africa.."
He then shook his head side to side as if to say no.. and I got very confused.
