Daytime Alco-Blow Swoop Nabs 80 Drunk Drivers in Nairobi

More than 80 drivers were arrested in Nairobi on Saturday morning following the introduction of daytime alco-blow tests on Friday.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet says daytime breathalyzer tests will continue throughout the festival season to nab motorists endangering lives through drunk-driving.

While announcing the introduction of daytime alco-blow tests, Boinnet said the change of tact is aimed at reducing the number of road crashes witnessed during festival seasons.

“It’s really aimed at getting rid of drunks hitting the road early morning while still groggy and not being in full charge of their faculties, hence risk killing themselves or worse still murdering innocent people,” Boinnet said.

"We have changed tact, those expecting us to do the drunk test in the night, we will also do the test in other hours of the day. We will particularly conduct tests in the morning. People have gotten used to finding alco-blow officers at on the highway at the late hours of the night and by 2 or 3 am in the morning they are gone, not anymore." he said adding that drunk-driving is the leading cause of road carnage in the country, especially during festival seasons.
