Former Sports CS Hassan Wario Evades Six-Year Prison Term After Paying Sh3.6 Million Fine

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario has saved himself from serving a six-year prison term.

Wario, who was handed the sentence by a Nairobi court on Thursday, was released after paying a Sh3.6 million fine.

The court ordered him to pay a Sh3.6 million fine or serve a six-year prison term in default after he was found guilty of corruption, abuse of office, and misappropriation of public funds during the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio, Brazil.

The court found that he abused his office by allowing three joyriders to travel to Rio without being part of Team Kenya.

Through his lawyer Rogers Sagana, Wario pleaded with the court to grant him a lenient sentence, saying he had learned from his mistake and that he is a remorseful offender having been dropped from the cabinet and his position as Kenya’s Ambassador to Austria.

Wario’s co-accused Stephen Soi, a former National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) official and Team Kenya Head of Delegation, was fined Sh105 million or serve a 12-year prison sentence in default.

While convicting the two, Chief Magistrate Elizabeth Juma of the anti-corruption court said Wario did not have the mandate to allow the three - Monica Sairo, Richard Abura, and Edan Adow - to travel to Brazil for the 2016 Olympic Games.

“The additional names were included after they closed the accreditation. Clearly, this was an indicator that the three were not part of the team Kenya,” ruled the magistrate.

KENYANS are Fools FULL of Themselves (both in KENYA and Abroad). Note: That's why some (in US) have been Falling for the PPP money "Heads over Heels" (and paying the CORRUPTERS e.g a $2,000 to $3,00 0Bribe for $20,000 PPP loan). This is 10% Interest plus the Legal 1% (coming to Total 11% or more). And they think the Money will be FORGIVEN just like that? Well ..... Keep on Dreaming the KENYAN Dream (of Easy money).😅🤣😂

Does it mean Jail is for those who have no money? He should have gotten both jail term and restitution. He is just using the money he had looted.

Found guilty of corruption, abuse of office and misappropriation of public funds and will not serve a day in jail? If the gain far surpasses the pain, why not keep on doing it? It was supposed to be both fine and jail time to serve as a warning to all the other greedy-corrupt leaders and elites in Kenya.

Well said @Mwororo. So, what in this ruling will deter others from abuse of office n corruption?

That’s Kenya for you. Its all business. Just steal 200mil, pay up 10 mil fine in lieu of jail time, VOILA, enjoy everlasting life with your loot!!! I’ll vie for MCA asap! Start from there and squeeze out the CDF funds, then buy your next political appointment with your money bags. Surely, ‘proud’ to be a Kenyan! Where being an overnight millionaire is more of a norm than an exception.

I will repeat what I had said before.
    Kenya iko na WENYEWE.
We have the Kenya for the rich and powerful.
We have Kenya for the masses.
    REVOLUTION COMRADES.
It's time to level the play field.

Slap on the wrist. Steal and set aside money for the possible fine is the message by the judge to others with similar motives of stealing public funds and abuse of office. Don’t these judges have guidelines?
