President Kenyatta has officially conferred a city charter to Nakuru municipality.
This makes Nakuru, a cosmopolitan urban area located in central Rift Valley, the fourth city in the country after Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu.
On Wednesday, the president signed the citation conferring Nakuru city status and unveiled the flag of the City of Nakuru.
“The City of Nakuru shall therefore have all the powers, authority, rank, and privileges of a city under the laws of Kenya. It shall have all the rights duties and standings of a City provided under the Urban Areas and Cities Act,” President Uhuru said.
The move comes months after the Senate adopted a report by the Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations Committee, which recommended the elevation of Nakuru to a city. In its report, the committee said the municipality had put in place the necessary infrastructure to attain city status.
Governor Lee Kinyanjui initiated the process of upgrading Nakuru to a city following his election as the county’s second governor in 2017 and his administration has been undertaking various projects to ensure the town meets the required standards for city status.

Other than increased taxation, how will Nakuru residents deal with disasters? With just two fire trucks, how will the so-called city handle road, plane, train, fire accidents or flooding? How come Atlanta,GA with a population of 600000 people like Nakuru has 43 fire stations but Nakuru has only one?To make the matter worse,Atlanta is managed by a mayor.
A very poor comparison. 1st and 3rd world... where is the match?
Ok,poor comparison. Why are Kenyans heavily taxed for ZERO services? Why pay all these workers for nothing instead of offering services? Can you define the functions of MCA,MP,WR,SENATOR,DG,700+MINISTERS,GOVERNOR and NOMINATED POOPs etc other than being paid for LOOTING? Most Kenyans even in US believe Kenya is like US in everything.
Thank you for your "kindness" Uhuru. Now bring your hidden cash and that of your compatriots from the offshore accounts. back
I will make Nakuru my capitol God willing. A better alternative to congested Nairobi
Great. This brings the number of cities that house a game reserve, both in Kenya and the World at large, to two.
