The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has given businessman Jimi Wanjigi 72 hours to surrender 10 firearms and over 480 rounds of ammunition in his possession.
Police Superintendent Kuriah Obadiah of the DCI’s Serious Crime Unit says investigations established that Wanjigi was holding the guns without any firearm certificate.
"The criminal investigation has established that you hold 10 firearms of different makes and descriptions which act of possession is in contravention of the law," Kuria said in a summon notice.
Some of the firearms the businessman is accused of illegally holding include a CQ, Glock, Ceska pistol, Shotgun, Glock 19, and a Gilboa.
The DCI noted that the holding of firearms and such a massive amount of ammunition during the current heightened political activity could be used to commit a myriad of offenses including maiming and killing of innocent persons or opponents.
“The Directorate has a duty to detect, deter, disrupt and investigate, any intelligence or information either on a complaint or on its own volition," the notice adds.
Kuriah further indicated that detectives encountered an illegally-armed former GSU officer within Wanjigi’s Kwacha Group of Companies when they raided the property to investigate a land matter on January 18th.
“The establishment of the fact that the Officer is an ex-GSU is an indication of a high-level scheme that you have congregated highly trained persons in the use of firearms for ulterior motives,” read the notice.
It added: “The firearms and ammunitions whereabouts are unknown and could be in the hands of criminal gangs as demonstrated by the arming of an ex-GSU officer inside the premises of a company you fully control.”
Wanjigi, who is eyeing the presidency in the forthcoming elections, is also required to present himself to the DCI headquarters within 72 hours, failure to which he will be liable to prosecution.
