NMS to Build Pedestrian and Cycling Lanes in Nairobi Estates in Sh1.4 Billion Project
The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) is set to spend Sh1.4 billion to build pedestrian and cycling lanes in estates surrounding the city.
This is part of the government’s efforts to enhance walking spaces and encourage the use of bicycles by city residents.
The project, which was first rolled out in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD), is expected to cover a total of 116 kilometers.
In the first phase of the project, NMS installed walking and cycling lanes on Kenyatta Avenue, Wabera, and Muindu Mbingu streets in the city centre.
The agency will set up such lanes in Nairobi estates with the aim of providing safety and decongesting the city.
“The Non-Motorised Transport corridors, (red for cyclists, grey for pedestrians), are currently being expanded in surrounding estates. The project is expected to cover a total of 116km,” NMS said in a statement seen by Business Daily.
“With the transport sector contributing 11 percent of total emissions in the country, uptake of the walking and cycling culture is set to significantly mitigate pollution from vehicle emissions.”
NMS director-general Maj-Gen Mohamed Badi warned against encroachment, littering, and parking along the corridors, and directed licensed vendors to have their displays at least two meters away from the walkways.

First, for close to Kshs 0, NMS can enforce existing law that everyone sell their products at their legitimate place of business. It's illegal and unfair to be selling fruits outside a grocery story. After enforcing these laws, NMS can then proceed to spending the billions.

Long overdue....but with nduthi men riding their motorbikes on pedestrian space....riding wrong side of the road...jumping red lights and even ignoring police controlled roundabout traffic while policemen act as if it's all okay, all I can say is let's wait and see...and good luck.
