Azimio's Kennedy Ng'ondi Elected Nairobi County Assembly Speaker

Former Kware MCA Kennedy Ng’ondi has been elected the Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly.

Ng’ondi, who was fronted by the Raila Odinga-led Azimio coalition, trounced his closest competitor Hassan Robow of Kenya Kwanza Alliance to win the coveted seat in the second round of voting on Thursday. He garnered 68 votes out of the 123 votes cast while Robow secured garnered 55 votes.

A second vote was ordered after the two leading candidates failed to attain the two-thirds threshold to win the speaker’s seat.

County Assembly clerk Edward Gichana announced Ng’ondi got 71 votes while Robow amassed 52 in the first round.

"Having attained the majority requirement, I declare Kennedy Ng’ondi as the next County Assembly speaker," Gichana announced after the second round of voting.

Ng’ondi, who served as the Nairobi deputy speaker from 2013 to 2017, becomes the assembly’s fourth speaker after his predecessor Benson Mutura.
