Azimio leader Raila Odinga has acknowledged receiving messages from Kenyans expressing opposition to a potential handshake with President Ruto.
This comes after Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto yesterday agreed to participate in a six-day national dialogue forum scheduled to commence on July 15. This initiative aims to address pressing issues facing Kenya, but has also sparked controversy and debate among citizens. The prospect of a "handshake" between Odinga and Ruto has become a contentious issue. While some view the dialogue as an opportunity for constructive engagement, others remain sceptical about the intentions of the political elite.
In a post on X, Raila is pictured alongside several political leaders including Senators Edwin Sifuna from Nairobi, Eddy Oketch from Migori, and the nominated Senator Crystal Asige. In the caption accompanying the images, Raila states, "These leaders have informed me that you do not want the handshake. The message has been received."
The proposed multi-sectorial forum is designed to bring together key stakeholders from various sectors, including political leaders, civil society representatives, and experts. President Ruto has emphasized the importance of this forum in charting a way forward for the country. The agenda is expected to cover critical issues such as youth unemployment, economic challenges, governance, and social reforms. Kenyan youth have been particularly vocal about their demands for accountability and meaningful reforms. However, some political leaders including Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua have cautioned that the dialogue must be conducted in good faith. They warn against the potential hijacking of genuine reform efforts by political elites.
According to Sifuna, Odinga will not be representing Generation Z (Gen Z) during these talks. The senator emphasizes that Gen Z has already declared their political neutrality and has not chosen Odinga as their representative. Despite this, Sifuna acknowledges that Odinga has a significant following that he will be representing at the dialogue. The senator stresses the importance of their participation, stating that they have a vested interest in Kenya's progress and cannot remain passive when initiatives are underway to improve the nation's situation.
Sifuna questions the controversy surrounding Odinga's involvement in the proposed dialogue, particularly in light of the recent talks between the youth and President William Ruto. He argues that if such engagements are acceptable, there should be no issue with the ODM leader's participation in the upcoming discussions.
"Young people had their X Space with the President, did you see Sifuna or Raila there? Raila is a leader. Not everyone in Kenya is leaderless, some have leaders and the leaders want to dialogue because it is all of us who can build this country," he said.
