Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah has announced his intention to contest the presidency against incumbent William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 General Election.
Wajackoyah, who garnered 61,969 votes and placed fourth in the 2022 elections, voices his criticism of Ruto's government for its failure to include diverse presidential candidates in its broad-based governance approach. In a recent interview on K24, Wajackoyah expressed disappointment with the current administration's composition, characterizing it as filled with individuals disengaged from the issues raised by protesters.
He asserts that the appointments made by President Ruto are more a temporary solution aimed at restoring stability rather than a sincere commitment to addressing the grievances highlighted during protests. Wajackoyah reveals that he had been offered a ministerial position but chose to decline, citing concerns over the integrity of the vetting process.
He further condemns the government's handling of protests led by younger generations, emphasizing the arbitrary arrests and cases of abduction involving youth, allegations that the government has rejected. He calls for accountability and urges the international community to intervene regarding the actions taken against protesters. Looking ahead to his presidential campaign, Wajackoyah reaffirms his dedication to campaigning in 2027 with a platform that supports the legalization of marijuana.
He asserts that marijuana holds a significant status as a "holy plant" referenced in religious texts, claiming that the burning bush from which God spoke to Moses was indeed marijuana. Wajackoyah calls for further research into the use of hemp for purification purposes and expresses optimism about securing the backing of the Church in his campaign efforts.
"Go to the book of Genessis 1:29, God Himself said this is my holy plant...God appeared in the form of fire and smoke. Have you ever asked yourselves what that smoke was?" Wajackoyah said.
Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has also announced his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 elections, asserting he will challenge President William Ruto even if he stands alone. In a press briefing at his Upper Hill office in Nairobi on November 28, Omtatah emphasized his commitment to creating a "free country" and declared his campaign would focus on the people rather than financial resources, criticizing the notion that Sh7 billion is necessary for a successful run.
Omtatah has formed a Presidential Exploratory Committee, led by governance expert Mary Riungu, to facilitate his campaign and clear any barriers to his candidacy. He aims to transform Kenya’s economy from a per capita income of 1,900 to 30,000, promising reforms in education, healthcare, and transportation while addressing corruption and poverty. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is also a notable contender for the 2027 presidential race.
