A wildfire that erupted on grasslands adjacent to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) earlier today has been contained, with authorities confirming that airport operations remain unaffected.
The blaze, which originated near 75 Airport North Road, prompted a rapid response from emergency services, according to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA). Videos circulating on social media showed flames spreading across a grassy area near one of the airport's runways.
One video, filmed from a landing aircraft, captured the fire in close proximity to the runway. The KAA has assured the public that all flight schedules, passenger processing, and cargo handling are proceeding as normal.
"All airport activities, including landing and takeoff, are set to continue without disruption," the KAA stated in a press release.
Fire engines, police officers, and teams from the Kenya Defence Forces, the Nairobi County Fire Department, and KAA's Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Service were deployed to combat the fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The incident occurred shortly after JKIA was named African Cargo Airport of the Year at the STAT Times International Awards for Excellence in Air Cargo, recognizing its significant role in regional trade and logistics.
JKIA General Manager Dr. Rose Koros accepted the award along with Jacob Bwana, Manager of Cargo, and Debra Ondaba, Manager of Product & Brand. The KAA lauded the award, citing its commitment to operational efficiency and enhanced cargo handling capabilities.
