Kenyan Diaspora Unites to Support Olympic Champion Peter Rono Following Cancer Diagnosis
Former Olympic champion Peter Rono has been diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer and is due to begin treatment on 15 July 2026.
Kenyan diaspora communities are raising funds to help cover his medical expenses and support him during his treatment. Rono won the men's 1,500 metres gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, but his contribution has extended far beyond athletics.
For many years, he has helped young Kenyans secure scholarships to study and compete in sport overseas, creating opportunities for education and personal development. The fundraising campaign is being led by Gotabgaa, a diaspora organisation that Rono helped establish.
The organisation says his work has benefited many individuals and families by expanding access to education and strengthening links within Kenyan communities abroad. In a statement, Gotabgaa described Rono as a mentor, community leader and visionary who has consistently dedicated his time and effort to helping others.
As Rono prepares to undergo treatment, the organisation is appealing for financial support to help ease the costs associated with his care. It is also encouraging supporters to offer messages of encouragement and prayers for Rono and his family during this period.
The fundraising campaign reflects the role of diaspora communities in supporting members during times of need. Organisers say they hope that early diagnosis, medical treatment and community support will assist Rono in his recovery.
