Three more suspects have been apprehended in connection with the murder of Nakuru activist Richard Otieno, known as “Molo President,” according to a statement released Sunday by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The arrests follow forensic analysis by the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB), linking the individuals to the January 18th killing in Elburgon, which sparked public protests. The suspects are scheduled to appear before the Nakuru Chief Magistrate's Court on Monday for custodial orders.
This second wave of arrests brings the total number of suspects detained in the case to eight.
On February 3rd, authorities initially arrested five individuals, including three direct perpetrators and two motorcycle taxi (bodaboda) drivers who allegedly transported the perpetrators to and from the scene. Two of the initial suspects had previously been arrested and placed on probation for assaulting Otieno in late 2024.
Two of the three most recently apprehended suspects were captured in Tanzania with the assistance of Tanzanian authorities. The DCI reported on Monday, February 24th, that the suspects had fled to Majahida in Tanzania's Bariadi District to evade capture, but were apprehended and repatriated to Kenya on February 21st. The third suspect was arrested in Kenya upon their return.
The investigation reveals that the perpetrators were transported from Molo to Elburgon specifically to commit the murder. The DCI is continuing its search for additional suspects as the investigation progresses. The DCI credits its strategic partnerships and advanced forensic capabilities with enabling significant progress in the investigation.
