Speaking at the ODM's 20th-anniversary celebration held at Bukiri Primary School in Funyula Constituency, Busia County, Odinga underscored the critical need for collective input from party members before making pivotal decisions.
He reaffirmed ODM's enduring commitment to its foundational principles and manifesto, recalling the party's instrumental role in the establishment of Kenya's new constitution. Odinga also addressed the ongoing challenges related to devolution, citing the persistent issue of inadequate financial disbursements from the national government.
The call for extensive consultations received strong endorsement from attendees, with Odinga assuring them that the party's decisions would prioritize the needs and interests of the populace. Senior party officials, including Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Senator James Orengo, echoed Odinga's sentiments by emphasizing the importance of preserving ODM's distinct political identity and resisting absorption into the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Sifuna urged party members to uphold ODM's core values of advocating for the marginalized and promoting democratic governance. Orengo lauded Odinga's steadfast leadership and principled stance. ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga also voiced her support for Odinga's consultation initiative, reiterating the party's dedication to representing the interests of ordinary citizens.
Deputy Party leaders, such as Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, pledged their unwavering support for Odinga's forthcoming decisions. Arati highlighted the party's strategic ambition to either independently form the government or through a coalition. Kisumu Governor and Interim Party Leader Professor Anyang Nyong'o stressed the need for comprehensive long-term planning and sustained support for Odinga's leadership.
Minority leader in the National Assembly Junet Mohammed and Kakamega Governor Fernades Barasa also expressed their backing for Odinga's consultation process, pledging to adhere to his ultimate decision. Junet emphasized the importance of heeding the voices of the people and condemned those who celebrated Odinga's loss in the AUC chairperson race.
