Edwin Sifuna Vows to Uphold ODM Unity After Raila Odinga’s Death

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has pledged his full support to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), reaffirming his loyalty to the party during Raila Odinga’s memorial service in Bondo, Siaya County.
Sifuna, who also serves as ODM Secretary General, made the commitment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, describing the party as one of Odinga’s most enduring legacies. His remarks come at a pivotal time for ODM as it prepares to chart its course following the death of its longtime leader.
He acknowledged past disagreements within the party, including his opposition to the Memorandum of Understanding between Odinga and President William Ruto. In August, he had publicly threatened to resign if the party supported Ruto’s 2027 presidential campaign. However, his tone has since shifted, with a renewed call for restraint and collective reflection among ODM leaders.
“This is not the time to push divisive narratives within ODM,” Sifuna said, urging leaders to listen to the party’s grassroots supporters.
He stressed the need for unity and cautioned against internal disputes that could weaken the movement. His remarks received strong support from attendees, who gave him one of the loudest ovations during introductions.
Other senior party figures echoed similar sentiments. Ruth Odinga and Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati called for solidarity, while Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina dismissed concerns of factionalism.
“I know a lot of people are expecting that ODM will fight; that we will have different factions. I want to assure Kenyans that… we will follow Baba’s footsteps,” Ole Kina said, referring to Odinga’s final message of cohesion.
Mombasa Governor and ODM Deputy Leader Abdulswamad Sherriff Nassir also reaffirmed the party’s political ambitions. “In 2027, ODM will either be in government or be the government,” he declared, signalling the party’s determination to maintain a central role in national politics.
