James Mwangi, the owner of Kericho's Sunshine Hotel that kicked out Laikipia Woman Representative Catherene Waruguru and her husband William Kiget has defended the controversial move.
Speaking to The Nairobian, Mwangi stood by the decision to eject the Jubilee MP from the hotel after she failed to produce a marriage certificate, a requirement for any couple seeking to spend the night in one room at the hotel.
The businessman said he doesn't care the repercussions of the move, stating that he will never compromise "family values' instilled in him by his father.
"It is against our rules for unmarried couples, a man and woman outside wedlock to sleep in one room," he said.
"Some managers have threatened to quit over the strict hotel rules but I'd rather lose clients than compromise on family morals inherited from my father," said the 63-year-old class six dropout.
Efforts by Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter, MPs Nelson Koech, Sylvanus Maritim and Florence Bore to convince the hotel to allow Waruguru and her husband spend the night there bore no fruits.
“Rules are rules and every establishment reserves the right to admit clients or deny them access. Golf clubs, for instance, are members-only establishments and those rules cannot be broken," the hotel’s manager, Frank Kirui, said.
“Mheshimiwa should have obeyed the hotel’s rules instead of humiliating staff.”
Waruguru has urged residents to boycott the hotel even as she plans to take legal action against the owner and manager.
“My traditional wedding to Kiget was witnessed by elders, what kind of document did the hotel want me to produce to show for it?” said Waruguru. “I can’t believe that my fellow tribesman could deny me accommodation."
“I will file a suit against the hotel,” Kiget told The Nairobian.

Boss, point of correction first, this guy is a business personnel and I hope you know in business its willing buyer and willing seller, second that is private accommodation in other terms they hold the power to allow anyone as well as deny entry to whoever. If its public every one has the right to. I can't wait to see this misarable fail on law suit. Common sense is not common after all
It may be a private licensed business. The license gives him permission to sell services to the public. It spells out the terms. If those terms clearly say that you cannot discrimate based on marital status, religion, sexual orientation, etc, then Waruguru may have a winnable case against mwangi. Law is an ass, and before we shout from the rooftop, it pays to look at the merits and demerits of the argument.
@Anos, you can not sue Jos A. Bank for discriminating women. That is their choice of who to sell their products to. Sun Shine hotel has a choice of who they want to sell their products to - single and married couple who can provide married certificate.
I don’t get your argument. You are simply reasserting your bias.
Waruguru will surely have a pay day on this one. Is she married to this guy? Yes, through Customary marriage. Is Customary marriage recognized in Kenya as legal marriage? Yes. Absolutely. Does the hotel owner admit married couples? Yes. Was the hotel owner informed by the said couple and others(witnesses) that they are married and still refused to admit them? Yes. End story. Moral of the story is;If you decide to make your rules, stick to them. Better yet, read the Constitution. This guy will be beaten at his own game, Bure kabisa.
Imara stop making a Fool of Yourself in these days Many children have Lost and are still Losing their Parents and Loved ones to Promiscuity and AIDS. Also note that this is Mwangi's Hotel and he has the Right to Askari it the way he wants. And if He Looses business: It's none of your Problem (unless you're a Shareholder in the Hotel). Nuwahurire waase?
@Guest 1, I fail to see the connection between what is at issue, and AIDS,could you please elaborate?
Maxiley. Your PERPETUAL and seemingly DELIBERATE Ignorance (about Moral Issues or Values) Boggles and even Bothers me to the Core. Anyway: I would NOT allow Adultety, Fornication (and even Homosexuality) in my Motel, Hotel or Lodging (whatever you want to call the Sleeping places). These 3 Evils cause and Spread AIDS (with Gay men being the Originators of the HIV that causes AIDS). So stop PRETENDING to know Nothing when in Real sense you know Something.
Iam glad that you are not a lawyer. At issue here are two married people needing aroom. I nobody knows their AIDS?HIV status but themselves. Besides that, not all immoral activities carry AIDS. Its simple, you have sex with a positive person ,regardless whether in church,or 5star hotel, its pretty risky. You have sex with a negative person in same places, you are safe, and ofcourse assuming you are also negative. Where did I go wrong?
Follow the small rules Waruruguru,a leader like you is an embarrassment, what was too hard for you to just park and move to different hotel that fates you, what s bad example to our young generation that is looking up to the leaders,if you can't respect the hotel small rules, how on Earth would you convince a motorcycle young man or woman to not ride on the wrong side of the road? please all our leaders, follow the small rules and be a good example to Kenyans, mature up and don't be crying babes, for heavenly sake, just to have sympathy? No one babes the wanjiku,we ain't gonna babe you either, follow the small rules, period.Mr Mwangi cogratulations, stick to your guts, it's your family morals and no one should change that, leaders in Kenya are used of bossing and pushing wanjiku, now you know your position, your right, stand up for your right, when any customer enter your door they have to follow your small rules, you can't afford to change your hotel rules every time a leader knock on your door, excuse us leaders of Waruruguru character
Susan. This Waruguru Whoremonger who has RESPECT for other People's marriages. And this is why she has been "Pele!Pele!!Pele!!!" all over since the Incident.
The problem with some Kenyans is basing their conclusions without understanding the whole story.I always feel sad for bongolala Kenyans who chose to be paying 47 Warugurus for nothing but on this she will be paid genuinely on one ground. That the cahier who reserved her a room at 4pm didn't demand the wedding certificate.He/She only took the money without demanding the document. They only demaded it later when the couple was going to sleep.
further more why this mpigs things are above everything...manugu sana.
Hongera Mr. Mwangi. Good job. Waruguru is an embarrassment to Laikipia people. Sun Shine hotel is not for prostitution. Why not go to Karumaindo across the street which does not even ask for id. Wait wife number 3 and 4 are coming soon.
Mheshimiwa @Mgeni1 (Guest1):
@Imara, if you did marketing in school you should know that you should target a certain customers for your products. Sun shine hotel is not for everybody. It is for married people who can produce their married certificate and single. That is what makes it unique. Marumaindo is for everybody. They do not care as long as you have money.
So next time a hotel in Kenya says they do not sell to African clients, we should simply shut up and move on; because, according to your logic, it is their right to choose their clients?? Be careful what you wish for. Put your bias aside and see what slippery slope you open up when you blindly follow this argument.
The baker who refused to make a cake for gay wedding won by 7-2
And you celebrate off course. Until you are a victim of some other form of seclusion. Power to you.
That is a lazy thinking because you can be told to do something against your faith, religion or morals. You never looked at it that way. You have to stand up for what you think is morally right for you
Mheshimiwa Ndugu @Mkenya:
Susan amesema.rules are rules regardless who u are.laikipia hotel ni mob.I wish to see her lawyer
These woman is embarrassment to all youth leaders and Kikuyu queens. No one can force me to welcome a stranger into my house. Let her and other registrators differentiate between Parliament and one's business. She is a disguise to Laikipia electorates. If it was for real that he was at her in-laws, kwani mzee hajanjenga nyumbani. Kalenjins style up please and built a house for your wives otherwise, you will be forced to be lying in the bush. Wabunge yani wanataka kupangia MTU amri za kwake? Tumerogwa kweli na hawa wabunge.
Kenyans youth leaders are yet to be fully mature if maturity is of the said caliber. Our medias, what was the news on the briefing, haki masomo Kenya ni kama hupata akili za wengine zikiwa na matope.
