"Ugali Man": Kenyan Man Pictured Salvaging Ugali as Gov't Demolishes Illegal Structures in Nairobi

A man who 'rescued' ugali as the County government of Nairobi demolished illegal structures in Kilimani estate on Thursday has stunned Kenyans on social media.

The photo of the yet to be identified man surfaced online on Thursday evening and immediately went viral as users shared it widely. 

In the image, the man is seen carrying a huge piece of Ugali on his right shoulder and holding it carefully with both hands.

Owners of the structures salvaged what they valued most but the decision by this man to carry ugali on his shoulders has puzzled most social media users.

More than 120 business-people were counting losses as county bulldozers brought down their stalls. Nairobi County Director of the Enforcement Unit Peter Mbaya said the demolition targets illegal structures built on road reserve, adding that the exercise will be extended to all the 17 sub-counties.

“We were dealing with the small structures. We wanted to arrest as many as possible and take them to court to act as a deterrent to others. We were enforcing all the illegalities. There were some who were dumping wastes, some cooking by the roadside while others were hawking,” said Mbaya.
