Atheists in Kenya Demand February 17th be Declared Public Holiday for Non-Believers

Atheists in Kenya (AIK) has asked the government to declare February 17th a public holiday for non-believers in the country.

Through its leader Harrison Mumia, the body wants the day declared as non-believers holiday just like Christmas for Christians and Eid-ul-fitr for Muslims.

Mumia said it was unfair that Atheists do not have any recognized day for them while Christians and Muslims have more than two holidays spread across the year.

"There is no shortage of religious holidays celebrated in Kenya. Christmas, Eid ul-Fitr, Diwali, Aid al-Adha, Easter and Ramathan are just a few. Even though atheists constitute an estimated 5% of the Kenyan population, this should not be the reason why we cannot have any public holidays," Mumia stated in a letter to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.

The Atheists leader further argues that declaration of February 17th as a public holiday for the local non-believers would promote the freedom of religion enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya.

"The government cannot ignore the place of atheists in Kenya. We deserve as much recognition as other faiths," he adds.

"Recognition as other faiths" What faith do you represent? You should be locked up for what you are trying to promote.

A little confused here. Christians celebrate Christmas, Diwali for Wahindis because they are Hindus........ what will your holiday be called, and what will you be celebrating?

Isn't it interesting to see the tone adopted by the pious and religious when another group cites their right to be free from their mythical beliefs? Why would the believers/faithful think that they have a right to be heard and be given special holidays, but not those who are skeptical or who have chosen to free themselves from belief in myths and medieval books?
Non-believers too can have a day to celebrate their non-belief, free thinking and freedom from mind forged manacles!

I leave you with these words from Omar Khayyam, the great 11th century Persian mathematician and poet who had to fight clerical bullying from the Mullahs of his days, which goes,
“And do you think that unto such as you
A maggot-minded, starved, fanatic crew
God gave a secret, and denied it me?
Well, well — what matters it? Believe that, too!”

Christmas holiday has its roots in apagan holiday. So christians cannot claim that it is solely theirs.Christians can share it with atheists.Probably not on the same platforms, though that would be nice and promotes botherhood.
No need for an atheist holiday.reasons not convincing.

I guess that is a good way to look at it. Christians claim that it is their holiday when the son was born to a virgin (avoiding entry into the birth canal, but somehow made it out). To the Pagans it is when the sun seems to begins its journey back to the north after what looks like it “died” for 3 days at the Capricorn from around Dec 22nd. My opinion: no need for a holiday for any faith. Their claims are spurious. And no tax breaks either.

"We deserve as much recognation as other faiths" . There you have your answer, you are not a faith, you are lack of it so your request cannot stand.
I shall not advocate that you be locked up like some have but I will suggest that you just get ignored.
