Cremation or Burial: Family of the Late Kibra MP Ken Okoth Disagrees

The family of the late Kibra Member of Parliament Ken Okoth has reportedly disagreed over whether the deceased should be interred or cremated.

Okoth is reported to have verbally informed his wife, Monica and his younger brother that he wished to be cremated once he dies, according to The Star.

The publication reported that Okoth’s ailing mother Angeline Ajwang’, however, dismissed the plans to cremate the remains of her son and wants him buried at her home in Kasawe, Homa Bay County.

In an interview with K24, Ms. Ajwang said that she prefers to have her son interred at her home where she can see his grave every day.

“I am of the opinion that he be buried at Kabondo Kasipul in Homa Bay County, where I wake up and see his grave every day,” she said.

On the other hand, Okoth’s paternal family wants him buried at his father’s ancestral land in Kochia, Homa Bay County.

Okoth’s father, Nicholas Obonyo separated with Ms. Angeline in the 1980s, when Okoth was barely a teenager. Okoth was brought up by his mother in Kibera slums, Nairobi following her separation with Mr. Obonyo.

Okoth, 41, succumbed to stage four colorectal cancer on Friday last week while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital.

I salute my fellow Kenyans for the way they are increasingly taking burial matters into their own hands, e.g forward planning. Lakini tafathali, let's involve our parents who are still deeply rooted to our cultural beliefs and values which stand at odds with modern way of life. Unless a will was drawn out and witnessed, this may become a long drawn out war between the mother and wife. Sad.

She can still have the cremation urn every day in her house , even closer - what is the difference?
