Kenya Government Orders Teachers to Report to Work Ahead of Reopening of Schools

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has ordered all teachers to report to their work stations by September 28th.

This is in preparation for the eventual reopening of schools following a disruption occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic, according to TSC CEO Nancy Macharia

Speaking after attending an education stakeholders’ meeting at Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) on Monday, Ms. Macharia said tutors are expected to help learners to recover the time lost during the closure.

“We ask teachers to report back to school on Monday, 28th September to prepare for the eventual reopening of schools. Our teachers are prepared and ready to support children recover the lost time and save the academic year that was at risk of being lost,” said Macharia.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha said President Kenyatta will soon announce when learning will resume. “It is about time we call our children back to school,” said Magoha.

The Covid-19 Education Response Committee has recommended primary and secondary schools be reopened on October 19th, Daily Nation reported.

The team headed by Sarah Ruto of Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) also proposed that both KCPE and KCSE candidates sit for their national examinations in April 2021.

It also advised the government to alter the school calendar to allow the academic year commence in June as opposed to January, a move that would save learners from repeating classes as earlier touted.

The committee was formed in May to advise the Education Ministry on the reopening of learning institutions in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
