Grief as Kenyan Couple Loses All Five Babies Hours After Birth

A Nakuru couple that was blessed with quintuplets on Wednesday is mourning the death of all five babies.

The family confirmed that two of the babies died on Thursday morning while the other three were pronounced dead in the afternoon.

“We have received the shocking news that the babies have passed on. The family is devastated and in shock. The hospital authorities told us that two of the quintuplets had died Thursday morning, and the other three in the afternoon,” family spokesperson Monica Kinyanjui told reporters.

25-year-old Margaret Wairimu delivered five babies, four girls and one boy, through a Caesarian section at Nakuru Level V Hospital.

The babies, who were all born underweight at 25 weeks, were placed in incubators at the hospital's Margaret Kenyatta Mother and Baby Wing.

Wairimu was rushed to the facility’s theatre on Tuesday after doctors discovered that she was expecting five babies, according to medical superintendent Dr. Aisha Maina.

"She came in through the hospital's outpatient with discomfort and on checking her, the medics realized that she had multiple pregnancies," Maina said.

Her pain exceeded, forcing medics to do an emergency Caesarian Section to save the mother and babies.

"The babies were delivered at seven months and have to be incubated for survival," she added.

Wairimu’s husband Simon Ndung’u, a 28-year-old matatu driver, from Bahati in Nakuru County, had earlier pleaded for help from well-wishers to raise the children.

Oh boy, I bet you this was due to a lack of proper prenatal care. It seems her pre-natal doctor didn't provide care if she was seen by a proper gynecologist. It is hard to miss that a woman is carrying 5 babies after 3 months. So sad for her and her husband. I could say she is young she can go at it again but losing the first ones, I'm sure it is not the same.

Talking of doctors, Iam reminded of the sad story of the young doctor in Machakos who committed suicide due to mounting bills, and lack of employment.
Reports reveal that, of the over 5230 doctors who were certified, and registered in the last 5 years, only about 1000 are employed. So 5 years plus doctors are still looking for work. And according to studies and research, our hospitals badly need doctors...
As per WHO recommendations, Kenya needs 2 doctors,2 nurses, and 2 midwives for every 1000 patients. Sadly that recommendation serves 10 times the number of recommended patients in Kenya.
Most hopitals are understaffed, and underfunded. Is there any wonder that from time to time our doctors, and nurses do strike for being overworked, and underpaid? Something is terribly wrong with this picture. I wish CS for health would comment on this critical matter.Shouldn't the health of our citizens be priority? The first thing MPs think of each time they start a new term is to increase their salary and benefits. This should be the last thing on their minds.

This is complete nonsense and absolute failure from the medical PR actioners involved in this case. You can defend them in whichever way you can but this does not add up at all. Assuming that nobody knew that this woman was carrying 5 babies, this woman was received in the Hospital, in sound health, assessment was done and the 5 babies were eventually delivered with no complications at all (other than caesarean section),the mother of the babies was also doing well. This shows that this woman was healthy. We are also told that the babies were doing well although they were underweight and they therefore had to be placed in Nicu unit. Why then suddenly will all the babies die one after another within a span of 12-24 hrs? When the 1st baby died, i should expect that, that should have set an alarm immediately! Was their a proper assessment going on for these babies? Does this hospital have a running protocol in place on baby care from birth to discharge? I honestly feel that this is the highest level of negligence in which case when the babies came to the open world from their mothers womb, the law of the jungle was released to them immediately. "Next"? called the obstetrician!
