Kenyatta National Hospital Successfully Separates Four-Month-Old Conjoined Twins

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has successfully conducted an operation to separate a set of four-month-old conjoined twin brothers.

In a press release on Monday, the country’s largest referral hospital said the 15-hour procedure was carried out on Sunday without any major complications.

The facility announced that the twins are in stable condition within the hospital’s intensive care unit.

The male infants, who were born in Bungoma County four months ago, were joined at the chest and abdomen at birth.

The 15-hour delicate operation began on Saturday night at a10 p.m and ended on Sunday at midday.

It was conducted by a team of at least 38 medical experts from KNH and the University of Nairobi (UoN) led by pediatric surgeon Dr. Joel Lessan.

The team had five Plastic and Reconstructive surgeons, 14 Pediatric Surgeons, Anesthetists, and one Cardiothoracic, as well as six nursing officers.

The twins have been under observation at the facility since September last year.

Doctors described their condition as ‘Thoracobnominocophagus’, a situation where twins are joined face to face at the chest and abdomen.
