A Kenyan couple was among four people killed in a fatal road accident in the US state of California on Sunday morning.
Authorities said the 2.30 a.m crash involving three vehicles on the southbound 71 Freeway near Central Avenue in Chino Hills was likely caused by a wrong-way driver, KNBC reported.
Police said an unidentified driver was driving a white 2021 Volvo S60 going northbound on the southbound 71 Freeway lanes. The vehicle was also occupied by an unidentified passenger as well.
The white Volvo collided head-on with a Black 2018 Volvo S90 that was driving southbound. The black Volo was being driven by a man and had a woman passenger.
After the collision, the two vehicles span out and made contact with other vehicles nearby.
The occupants of the black and white Volvos were pronounced dead at the scene.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found at least one car engulfed in flames. A California Highway Patrol sergeant, among the first to arrive at the scene, tried to rescue the occupants of the burning vehicle.
"He attempted to use his fire extinguisher (from) his patrol car," Highway Patrol Sgt. Kenneth Phillips said. "Once that was exhausted, he used a bystander's fire extinguisher and attempted to defeat the flames, however, was unsuccessful."
Two of the victims have since been identified as Kenyan man Gideon Mbatha and his wife Ruth of Lake Elsinore, California.
The couple left behind three children aged 12, 7, and 3. The two were members of the Beacon Hill Church, and the greater California Kenyan Community.
Family and friends are appealing for financial assistance following the devastating loss of the two.

NUNUJENI BIMA - Buy insurance
Nchi ya Marekani ni nchi ya watu wanaoamimi kuwa na bima (insurance). Kama WaSwahili walivyosema, "Ajali haina kinga."
Nawashauri WaKenya popote mlipo mnunue bima mara moja.
Unataka maiti yako ipelekwe
nyumbani ulikozaliwa?
Mambo kama haya ni muhimu sana kuyatekeleza wakati akili yako ingali timamu na pia mwenye afya nzuri ya mwili.
So sad. RIP
Poleni sana. What a tragedy.
My condolences to the family for this unexpected sudden event!
Beyond tragic. May God Comfort their children 🙏🏿
Oh No!! Poor young kids! My heart breaks!!
My dearest mwakilish family, this one we must pitch in. Three children became orphans in a matter of seconds. May God protect them and guide then into a bright future. My condolences to the rest of the family. RIP my sister and brother.
@ Mwororo, I know you mean well, and Iam sure all goodwill people will help any way they can.But I have a problem with you when you bring God is this matter, because I will be forced to ask you the following:
Did God know the accident would happen?
Did He permit it?
Did God know that the 3 kids would be orphans?
Basically what Iam asking is, if you believe the in omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient God where does He factor in tradegies like this one? Yes does he have a had in this tragedy?Should we even invoke His name in such matters?
Iknow these are tough questions but Iam sure Iam not the only one who thinks about them. And Iam sure they stress the faithful ones.
Nontheless a tragedy has occured, and we as human being will deal with it as best we know how.
@Maxiley,I appreciate everything you say here and yes- it is a tough question indeed. It is interesting that I saw your comments just seconds after asking my wife, "did you send the money" My brother, I appreciate all your comments on Mwakilishi because I read them all. You're funny even hilarious sometimes but also consistent when it comes to weighty matters such as God, politics and culture and corruption which I know you wroth. But I deviate. At least we're both in agreement that we must help this family. We did not say we will wait on God. It is interesting that you put God into the question of this accident before bringing in the fellow driving the white Volvo on the wrong side of the Fwy. What about free will? What about God's Grand plan? Watch this: and it is true, I remember telling my wife, what if the three children were seated on the back seat of the vehicle at the time of the accident? She shot back,God would not allow it! To me, our inability to tell with certainty that there is no God, is the very reason that there is God. The mystery is the answer. But all things work together for good- not all good things, but all things. It is not fair to pretend to answer your questions because I don't know that they have any answers- but I salute you as we help where we can and when we can.
Yes I have donated through Gofundme. It is a terrible loss.I dont know whatelse to say. Unfortunately these things happen, despite our best efforts to ward them off. That's why I asked it the powerful God could do something about this kind of things.
@ Mwororo, what do you think about people thanking God when they evade an accident that saves their lives, and kills 3 people?
Yes hard question. I personally dont think God is involved in our daily lives. He created us,and gave us brains to survive. We created cars, then help us transport fast, but they are also dangerous.I guess we just have to live with the good and the bad.
There's a go fund me for them, if you google their names utaipata. We all need to chip in for the kids
This is truly sad and doubly so for the unfortunate orphans left behind. RIP
I wish I(na Muka wakwa) can be allowed to adopt the kids.
They have relatives who are willing to adopt/keep them
Really sad event that took lives of husband and wife, leaving three children parentless. May their souls rest in eternal peace.
I agree…it’s beyond tragic. I am shaken and can’t help wondering why this or that.
Let’s contribute whatever we can especially for those children…the oldest(Nate) is just 12yrs old. He is still a child please help this family 🙏🏼
